Should the car be running or shut off when I recharge the a/c system?

Thanks any safety precautions I should take besides wearing safety googles and how do I know when I have the a/c fully charged? Auto parts store is closed now but will buy R134a and filler hose tomorrow. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

You will need R134a, and a filler hose. Charge the system on the low pressure side, it should have a blue cap on the charge point.
Your filler hose will only fit the low pressure side, just in case the cap has been removed.

Charge the system with the vehicle running, and the a/c on high.

Safety glasses, and gloves are a good thing when working with refrigerant (it's extremely cold). It should not take more than 2 cans of refrigerant to fill your system. I'm not sure of the exact pressure for your vehicle, but if you get too much in the system it will cause the compressor to start locking, and the belt squealing. If you get too much in the system, release the excess pressure. Your auto parts store should have the exact pressure available for you, and you can buy a hose with a pressure gauge built on it.

Air Conditioning blows hot in idle and cool while moving

The system has too much air in it and not enough free-on.

'96 Nissan Maxima, 116,000 miles: The air conditioning condensor kicks on, seems to be full of coolant, but will only blow hot air.

Time to go get it recharged. You can do this with a kit you buy at a parts store, or you can have a mechanic do it. If this was at all helpful, please rate. Thanks for asking.

2001 dodge 1500 pickup. The air conditioning

It sounds like a low charge. It could be a clogged expansion device also. It has a higher probability of being a low or contaminated charge.

19944 NISSAN MAXIMA A/C BLOWING HOT AIR

If your A/C unit is blowing hot air it is more than likely that you had a leak in your system at some point and all the refrigerant escaped into the atmosphere. The solution to your problem is to take your car into a licensed professional and have them do an A/C leak test to find where the leak was, repair it, and then recharge the system. This information has been given to you by someone who has been with NAPA for over fifteen years.

2001 nissian maxima se low idle

adjust the idling, if too low then it can't sustain the power needed to keep the engine running when it engages.
