2001 Mitsubishi Galant Transmission problem?

Hi,

I was driving on RTE 95 doing the speed limit (65) and cruising along with no problem when all of a sudden the car lost it's power and basically felt like it was in neutral.

I coasted to the side of the road, engine still running, and tried moving through the gears.... All gears the same, engine would rev when hitting the gas but there was nothing happening. It was like all gears were neutral.

It's a GTZ version Galant with 133K miles.

This is the first issue I have had with this car... any advice????

    It's an automatic transmission

Is this a manual transmission or automatic?

The same thing happened to me on my '01 galant; it ended up being a pump or something in the transmission. It cost me a little over $800 to get it repaired.

Could be a few things:

  1. Low on auto transmission fluid; this would cause you to lose a few of the forward gears (reverse is used less often so its the last gear to go Start the car and add fluid to the specified markings on the Auto Transmission dipstick
  2. Bad auto transmission fluid; Check the fluid, if its brown and gives off a burning smell, it needs changing along with the filter
  3. Bad transmisssion; if neither of the above are true, then it sounds like the clutches have burned out on the transmission or the transmission itself is bad; if 1 or 2 hasn't solved your issue the car needs to be diagnosed at a reputable transmission shop; Make sure they lay out all of your options and if you decide to have a major transmission repair done, the Kelly Blue Book value on a similar car similarlly equipted in exellent condition is about $6,800 retail
I hope this leads you in the right direction. Don't be afraid to post back with any questions. Best of luck.

I am having the same problem. What was the problem with yours? Was it just the fluid? or did the transmission go out?

Im having the same problem. But will move foward if I step the gas pedal super slow. Since its the family car, I had the fluid drained yesterday. There was ateast 8 quarts in the bin. It seemed thin as water and was dirty black. Had it changed with 4 quarts only. Also did the throttle body clean and gas tank clean and even vaccum clean with Sea Foam. It burned alot of the accumulated carbon but its still sluggish. Wont go past 30 unless I go super slow. Maybe its a Sensor. In my case, I think the Catalyctic converters areclogged. Need to get that checked too.

Loss of engine power/transmission 2001 chevy tahoe over 65 mph

Sound's as though a previous owner installed a speed governor so that the engine would not exceed the nationwide 55-65 mph speed limit average. This most likely was a company owned vehicle or owned by someone concerned about speeding ticket's or excessive speed by a teenage driver. It can be uninstalled by an experienced mechanic. Unless this poses a problem while driving on an interstate, you may wish to leave it as is.

Error codes P0715 P0765 mitsubishi galant 2001 es

Your auto transmission is unable to select gears properly because the input speed is missing. Probably means a new input speed sensor or wiring repair is required.

does cruise light come on when you start the car, during the lamp check stage (during first seconds of starting) If it doesn't then the indicator lamp is probably out.

How do I adjust idle speed on a 2001 mitsubishi galant?

No adjustments are to be made. They simply mount in and connect the wires and drive. If yours is a faulty one replace it

Speedometer wont work

Most cars have one main vehicle speed sensor (vss). The VSS in front wheel drive cars is mounted in the transmission. A gear in the tranny turns a small gear on the VSS. If a tooth of the gear on the VSS is damaged, you can get that erratic speedometer jumping like you're experiencing. A malfunctioning VSS can cause problems with shifting and with the activation of the anti-lock braking system and cruise control. Have a Transmission shop inspect your VSS and replace if necessary, if your handy with tools. you can buy the VSS and replace you self. The speed sensors on the Galant are called pulse generators and need to be replace as a set. Located outside of the transmission right on top.
Good luck!
