96 Ford Taurus Speedometer Drops to Zero

I have a 1996 Ford Taurus automatic. When I'm on the freeway going fast (normally at the 70-range) my speedometer sometimes suddenly drops to zero and bounces back and forth between 0 and 10. It has trouble accelerating and the engine shifts into higher gear but nothing happens. I can feel it trying to get back to normal and it kicks a little. also noticed the power steering goes out with it on occasion, but most of the time I'm just going straight so I'm not sure if it happens every time or not.  It normally resolves itself when I drop my speed below 30 mph  or when I turn the car off and start it back up  again. It just scares me because I really have no clue what's going on. I went to a garage and brought it up but they didn't know the answer. Help me please!

Have the fault codes read
the speedo gets its signal from the VSS ( vehicle speed sensor) and that sensor also reports to the transmission control module
So check for a problem in that area

SOURCE: oil pressure gauge drops to

The Oil Pressure switch is notorious for going bad on Dodge truck. I recently change out my oil pump on a 5.2 L engine only to find that I had a faulty switch. The switch for a 5.2L is only 16.99 at autozone and is less time consumming than replacing the oil pump.

it is the vss (vehicle speed sensor). i had the same problem, cost £35 for sensor and clip. its behind the gearbox. very awkward job but can be done yourself. the hardest part is getting the pin out, you need a very good pair of molegrips and a lot of patience.

You may need a new Vehicle Speed Sensor. It is located on the Transmission on the Passenger side out-put shaft housing.

What are the symptoms of a faulty speed sensor on 96 ford taurus

The speedometer and odometer may not work, and the transmission may not shift. The check engine light should be on.

96 taurus shifts out of 1st @3200 then gos to2nd only to gos back

Possible solution:

Too many drivers neglect to change trans fluid or filter until trans is trash.
You might try doing that. Remove the oil pan and install a new filter and clean out the pan gook.
It 's a 25% chance you can drive ok again.
