Vacuum Modulator -(THM 400 only) REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: This applies to the THM 400 only.

  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  2. Disconnect the vacuum line at the modulator.
  3. Remove the screw and retaining clamp. Fig. 1: Vacuum modulator on the THM400 84907163.gif

  4. Remove the modulator. Be careful, some fluid may run out. To install:
  5. Install the modulator.
  6. Install the vacuum line. Be careful not to kink the vacuum line during installation. Replace any lost fluid.
---
The Governor is used in newer transmissions:

HYDRAULIC CONTROL SYSTEM The hydraulic pressure used to operate the servos comes from the main transmission oil pump. This fluid is channeled to the various servos through the shift valves. There is generally a manual shift valve which is operated by the transmission selector lever and an automatic shift valve for each automatic upshift the transmission provides. NOTE: Many new transmissions are electronically controlled. On these models, electrical solenoids are used to better control the hydraulic fluid. Usually, the solenoids are regulated by an electronic control module. There are two pressures which affect the operation of these valves. One is the governor pressure which is effected by vehicle speed. The other is the modulator pressure which is effected by intake manifold vacuum or throttle position. Governor pressure rises with an increase in vehicle speed, and modulator pressure rises as the throttle is opened wider. By responding to these two pressures, the shift valves cause the upshift points to be delayed with increased throttle opening to make the best use of the engine's power output. Most transmissions also make use of an auxiliary circuit for downshifting. This circuit may be actuated by the throttle linkage the vacuum line which actuates the modulator, by a cable or by a solenoid. It applies pressure to a special downshift surface on the shift valve or valves. The transmission modulator also governs the line pressure, used to actuate the servos. In this way, the clutches and bands will be actuated with a force matching the torque output of the engine.
---
At any rate, if the auto transmission shifts roughly, try to have it flushed out and refilled with new transmission fluid for $100 or so.

If this doesn't solve the problem, the transmission will have to be rebuilt to original specifications, or replaced with a transmission that doesn't have this problem (used or another rebuilt).

tip

My car does not shift in second gear.

Hi.

The first thing to do is replacing the transmission fluid. Metal debris inside the transmission box gets mixed with fluid and can cause similar problems.

The automatic transmission uses throttle position sensor to determine position and opening of throttle.
IF throttle position sensor is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

The automatic transmission is controlled by an electronic control module, that is energizing a set of solenoids to shift into gears.
The control module is a rectangular box, often located behind the dash and wired to transmission. The solenoids are attached to valve body, inside transmission.

If a solenoid is defective, or if control module is defective, the car may have problems shifting into one or more gears.

Problems concerning transmission control module, TPS and transmission solenoid are usually detectable reading fault codes stored on the car main control module (ECU/ECM).

Transmission problems are often returning a code p0700 after an OBDII scan.

Stored codes can be retrieved using an OBD scan reader.
If the car auto transmission is not shifting into gear, talk to the mechanic about the problem.
Only when the car has a really high mileage, or when there is a factory problem there is need to replace the gearbox.
A damaged gear box at low mileage is rather unusual.

Automatic transmission wont shift out of third gear

The transmission control module is responsible for correct shifting of transmission.it is on side of tranny. the throttle position sensor takes all the necessary measurements and sends it over to the Electronic Control Module on transmission to make it shift, if its ok! Try by changing the shift module on transmission. If this will not work check or change the TPS and check for a bad wire also. Hope this helps you out! God-Bless!

Ihave code p0731 stuck in 1st ratio .. what mean that code?

obviously refers to auto trans , could just need the trans fluid level topping up or even changing , if this does'nt resolve the problem then a more in depth diagnosis would be required at a repair shop as could be the ECU for example but do the fluid checks and go from ther ,keep me posted

2002 buick rendevous awd tranny wont shift out of first gear

let transmission shop do pressure test and diagnostic check.many things will cause transmission not to shift right.could have faulty over drive solenoid.faulty VSS sensor it controls shifts. could have faulty TPS sensor or TCM.the first and second shift valves or solenoids bad your transmission is electronically control many things will cause problems the transmission shop use scanner to check out all shift solenoids.the older transmissions use modulator valve and governor valve control transmission shifts but the newer transmissions shifts control by TCM and ECM.

Alot of people have the same problem, including me. Changing the transmission fluid is not going to help this problem. THe transmission filter is not something you change as much as you clean and reinstall, its just a metal screen. Call Kia and ask for an "OVERDRIVE SHIFT SOLENOID" they will need the last 8 digits of your VIN, vehicle identification number, to locate your part. I am in the process of changing mine. The part number should be something like 46313-39051. That number is for a 2001 Kia Optima, with the 4 cylinder. There are three shift solenoids bolted to the bottom of your transmission should. I'll let you know what the difficulty level when I am finished.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) uses signals from the vehicle speed sensor to detect the actual gear position (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th gear). Then the ECM compares the actual gear with the shift schedule in the ECM memory to detect mechanical troubles of the shift solenoid valves and valve body. SymptomsPossible sumptoms of OBD code P0798

- Low transmission fluid level - Dirty transmission fluid - Faulty pressure control solenoid valve - Pressure control solenoid valve harness or connectors - Pressure control solenoid valve circuit is open or shorted The Error code is generally activated on detection of the following conditions: The P0798 is triggered when the ECM detects an open or short circuit in shift solenoid valves Possible Solutions

What Transmission Solenoid did you replace ? Pressure control solenoid ? Shift control ? P0522 code is not saying oil pressure is low , It's saying the PCM is seeing sensor pressure low ! Do you know how to test automotive electrical circuits with a volt meter ? An this has nothing to do with your gears lit up . Different problem .
