Where I live most car parts chain stores will read your code for free. I would find out the code it will help in the search for the issue.

2001 KIA sportage down shifting by itself and the hold light keeps blinking what could be wrong

a blinking hold light means the transmission control sensor is telling the engine cntrol sensor that something is wrong. Usually it is nothing too serious, mine has been doing it on and off for years, go to a transmission shop that offers free or cheap diagnosis, get several opinios before spending a lot of money

I have a 2001 Kia Sportage that a PWR light has come on and I have no idea what it means. It is just about to click over 100,000 miles. really need to know what the light means.

punch the buttons on a hill and you may find it shifts from overdrive to 3rd gear for more power in climbing situations.

You can always tell if a car has a timing belt or chain by looking at the timing belt/chain cover. Metal cover means chain, plastic cover means belt, there are a few exceptions but in general this holds true, your Sportage has a belt by the way. :)

HOLD keeps coming on in my 99 kia sportage what does that mean

Look on the shifter lever,just bellow the push button. There is another push button there. That's the one you press or depress to keep the transmission on 3rd. gear. Just press it again and the hold light should come off.

Hold lite and and a p1624 code on a 2001 sportage

Code number p1624 is MIL Request Signal from TCM to ECM. which means malfunction indication light(MIL) is requesting a signal from your engine control module(ECM) or Transmission control module(TCM) i would reccomend u take it to the dealership to get it checked out.

Assuming a first generation Sportage, sounds like a problem with the vehicle speed sensor on the back of the transfer case (4wd) or transmission extension housing (2wd).

Could be as simple as a corroded/broken wire, through to a malfunction in the sensor. Take it to Autozone and get the codes read and let us know what they are (to be absoluteluy sure...).
