Check your transmission fluid level if at all possible. If your fluid is low you won't be able to engage any gears as there isn't enough pressurized fluid to shift the clutch or selector in the transmission box. If that's fine, next check the selector link and check it is connected to the transmission (not totally unheard of for it to come loose). Still no joy then it's the clutch...sorry.
SOURCE: manual transmission takes effort to put in gear.
Have the clutch looked at. If the clutch is not releasing fully it makes shifting difficult. Have the trans fluid changed too, it isn't expensive and probably is listed under your maintanance in the owners manual

It sound like the gear linkage isn,t set up right, you wouldn,t always be able to engage a gear unless you rocked the car.
SOURCE: I have a 1966 Ford Falcon with a C4 transmission.
I would begin by replacing the filter if its not new, 2 possibility of issue, faulty shifting module or defective transmission rebuilt. just because it has been rebuilt does not mean the individual work on it did a good job. the less cost effective way is to locate used modulator from ebay or junk yard, if that does not rectified the issue than more likely it will be the tranny. the bad part is that I dont know of a company offer a bench test for the tranny modulator.

speed sensor may also refer to the ABS sensor which are place on the knuckle close to the drive axle
Testimonial: "It was not an easy repair as I had to take off the exhaust manifold to give me room to get my hands in there to pull the pin and sensor out. You and Taran pointed me in the right direction. I imagine I saved at least 200 dollars in labor and marked up price that a shop would have charged. Thanks for the help Keith McViker"
