A few days ago just before arriving home the car started to make a whirring noise and continued over next few days. This morning went to open car with remote key but nothing happened got into using manual key put key in ignition and nothing at all. Got spare battery out and connected using jump leads and still nothing. Any ideas
You must take out the original battery because if it burned out the cells it will draw from the jump battery it doesn't matter that the cables are on the battery if still no start no click no remote Check for corrosion on all cables down to the starter and the block ground also the ground strap at the nose of the starter and the power distribution box cable from the alternator and battery clean it if the car still doesn't start that whining could've been the alternator check for battery voltage if none or very little this could be your problem and driving it just burned out the cells in your battery

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)

On many cars, if the battery is dead, it locks the key in the ignition. Put a battery charger on the car or replace the battery and give it a shot.

Did you check the alternator? if it is faulty the car will drain all the power from the battery until it goes flat

It could be a defective ignition switch as well (it has a disabling circuit) thinking the vehicle is stolen. The dealer has the equipment to see if is throwing a code for that.
