1997 cavalier w/automatic, and wont shift out of 2nd gear.

Runs fine in 2nd and reverse is OK. will manually go into first gear OK, linkage seems fine. It will sometimes shift into 3rd if you firewall the accelerator but not 4th (overdrive?). Is this just a sensor. I have not had it put on diagnostics. check engine light has been on for 6 months prior to this problem.

Need to pull codes 1st, the electronics of the transmission can cease all proper operation of the transmission. Have the DTC's checked before proceeding.

SOURCE: cannot shift properly

My Saturn did the same thing - twice. Where the clutch cables connects to the shifter box(??) there is a little clip that had fallen off. The first time this happened, the mechanic told me that I needed to replace the whole shifter box - costing me $400 dollars. The second time - about two years later a different mechanic charged me $15 for the clip and labor.

SOURCE: automatic transmission not shifting into 3rd or 4th

call a dealer and they will tell you you are suppose to change your transmission fluid every 2 years or 30,000miles but if you was carrying this much load you may have over heated the transmission so I would shop around and get a good deal at a transmission place where they can replace the filter and the fluid and adjust the bands on the transmission if needed

SOURCE: 4l60e slips in 3rd and 4th

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

My 2003 chevy cavalier shifter is loose and wont shift. Its stuck in second gear the clutch is still working because i had to press it in to roll back and limp it home what should i do to fix it

First things first. Is the fluid full, You said the clutch still works. ? is it stuck in 2nd? or - only 2nd gear works and no other gear? No reverse? Second thing to check would be to look at the linkage and or cable/ or cables I need more info.

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

97 cavalier starts and runs ok from a cold start after a few minutes of warm up it starts to run rough and miss. If i try to drive it it will start out ok but won't shift automaticly but shifts fine m

Sounds like possibly more than on problem, crankshaft position sensor, or ignition module likely on starting prob which maybe affecting shifting due to hard code in ecm, or shift prob could be shift solenoid in valve body of transmission. Both parts readily available from local parts store
