When my "door ajar" light was on it was because the liftgate sensors (switches) indicated that the gate was open, even thought it wasn't. I took off the plastic trim, and took out the sensors - but that isn't necessary. Just soak with the switches with silicone spray, and see if that helps. There is one on each side of the liftgate - I believe both must indicate "closed" for the light to go off.

I have gotten replacement motors at Checkers for both driver and passenger doors - so now I have lifetime replacement motors.. The first time you replace them, a little drilling is needed on the door sheet metal, but it will not show up once the trim is reinstalled. This repair is a little involved, but well within the capability of a novice mechanic.

The door light is on and the diniging is due to your driver door ajar switch being broken or not being depressed all the way.
Adjust the door to close tighter. Is the door ajar light on too?

If not, it may be the GEM module. Expensive. get from salvage yard. car-part.com. go to page with asterisk for cheapest price.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lamps, Courtesy The generic electronic module integrates control of all interior lights, electrical warning lamp controls and courtesy lamps by controlling interior lamp relay (13A777) . Power supply to interior lamp relay is controlled by "battery saver" function. The battery saver relay supplies power to the interior lamp control relay. The generic electronic module controls the interior lamp control relay which supplies power to the courtesy lamps. The generic electronic module activates the interior lamp relay when a signal is received from the driver, passenger, liftgate or sliding door ajar switches. After activation, the generic electronic module deactivates the relay when any of the three following conditions occurs:

  1. Five seconds have elapsed after all the doors are returned to the closed position.
  1. NOTE: Courtesy lamps are turned off if vehicle speed is greater than 24 k/mh (15 mph), and stay off until vehicle speed is less than 16 k/mh (10 mph), and a new door ajar signal is received. If a new door ajar signal is received when vehicle speed is above 24 k/mh (15 mph), the courtesy lamps will remain OFF.

The ignition switch is changed to RUN or the vehicle speed is greater than 24 k/mh (15 mph).
  1. The generic electronic module receives a LOCK command before the timer expires, it will remove power from the interior courtesy lamp control relay.
  • If the vehicle is equipped with the illuminated entry system, the courtesy lamps dim to OFF shortly after the door is closed.
  • On vehicles without the illuminated entry system, the courtesy lamps will turn OFF immediately when the door is closed.
If any door remains open and the ignition switch remains OFF for 20 minutes, the battery saver relay will turn off and remove power from the interior lamp control relay.

Two generations though, but you might be lucky if your 1998 is part of the 2nd Gen release. do you have a driver's side sliding door?
Second generation (1999-2003) Released in the summer of 1998 as an early 1999 model, the Ford Windstar was given a complete redesign. As one of the first Ford vehicles in North America to adopt the New Edge styling language, the redesign also was distinguished by the addition of a driver's side sliding door.

Few things not working on my 2003 eddie bauer edition ford explorer.. Drivers side seat mover doesnt work (its electrical) automatic head lights (have to do them manually) all locks dont work keyless entry...

you are having all kinds of electrical problems which can maybe be solved by replacing either fuses or relays. also your electrical circuits are being interrupted by shorts in the system and could be a problem with your wiring harness.

2000 ford windstar... electrical mess!!

one reason for that fuse to blow is a bad brake pressure switch on the master cylinder. could be a
warranty/recall item. can also leak brake fluid. also check behind each wheel for any sign of brake fluid,
particularly the rear wheels if you have rear drum brakes. fixed one here recently where the vehicle's jack
came loose in the right rear compartment and short that circuit. make sure your jack is stowed properly.

good luck

Windows and fuel gauge

The windows motor has died, the slider has a loose lock/unlock lever, usually held in place by a small plastic clip. The gas guage has a loose connection, or a bad sending unit. The sending unit is in the gas tank. You can probably fix both doors yourself, but the gauge will most likely require the tank to be removed. I would figure a few hundred to fix it.

2004 ford mustang

this may sound stupid but its only a temporary fix. take the panel off the door and tap the window motor with a small hammer. do all the other windows work? does it make any sound when you hit the button? you probably end up having to replace the window motor.
