My 1996 jeep grand cherokee wouldnt start, acted like a dead battery. (had battery and alternator tested both good) when I jumped it it started right up but as soon as I took my foot off the gas it died..no matter how long we let it charge it would not remain running unless I was giving it some gas?

Have throttle body cleaned and "minimum air rate" adjusted. Computer looses learned memory when battery is disconnected and has to start over again.

SOURCE: jeep will not start unless you give it gas

It sounds like the idle air control valve (IAC) may be stuck with carbon build up. You can ether remove the IAC, or if your lazy like i am, buy two cans of Throttle body cleaner. Just follow the instruction on the can and pay attention to the IAC, try to spray the Throttle body cleaner hose towards the IAC. DO NOT USE CARB CLEANER, it's too corrosive to the gaskets used on throttle body's. If your going to remove the IACThe idle air control valve is located on the back of the throttle body. It has an oval electrical connector and two torx screws holding it in. Unplug the connector, remove the two screws then lightly tap the body with a soft faced mallet to loosen it from the body. Once you have it out and prior to installing a new valve clean the seat inside the throttle body where the idle control fits. This must be very clean! Installation is in the reverse order. Btw, to save some cash, pull the valve out and clean it, this usually fixes the problem for quite a while. Look for crushed / cut, just any signs of damage to the wire harness to your IAC. After you have cleaned the IAC and still have the problem, you may have a bad IAC and needs to be replaced. Good luck and hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee intermittent voltage drop, lose electric

I wont list this as a solution, but it seems that working in the area of the alt may have moved around some wiring...the alt may be OK but perhaps an adjacent wire (maybe a ground) is not well connected. Also check crimped on wire loops on alt connectors..they like to corrode at the crimp where it crushes on the actual wire.

I would have a load test done on the battery as there is a dead cell evident from the number of jump starts you need. Have an auto electrician test the alternator for charge rate and out put. check drive belt condition and tension.

I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Limited this is giving me fits with the charging system. I've replaced the battery twice in the past 3 months. I've also installed a factory rebuilt alternator. I can drive...

Alternators have a built in regulator that tells them when to turn on and off. Just because the alternator is working, does not mean the regulator is turning it on and off when it should, in turn, over charging or undercharging your battery ruining it. The problem is you could also have a short somewhere that is draining the battery when it gets damp. The starter or a bad battery cable is usually the culprit here. A bad battery cable can mimic a dead battery, and when you jump it you put enough power to allow it to "jump" the bad spot, But also put a major strain on the cars electronics. So start with new cables, a 96 is 15 years old. Inspect the starter for any sign of corrosion or other damage at the same time. If this doesn't help, demand a replacement alternator. 98% of rebuilds are good, but 2% aren't.

Generator light on 1996 jeep cherokee. what does

First clean the battery terminals & their connection to the battery. Check to see if the alternator belt is tight. Once started, connect an amp. meter to thebattery terminals. Black to black, red to red. If the reading is over 13.2, alternator is charging. If it is not, change the alternator. If it is over 13.2, you may need a new battery. Have a load test done at any reputable automotive store. Hope this helps & if it does please do the right thing & recommend this advice. Thanks

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Alternator issues?

have the alternator regulator and diodes tested. sometimes when the regulators fail they allow ac voltage to go to the battery. ac voltage doesn't charge the battery properly (causes it to deep cycle and shortens its life) and causes all sorts of funny problems with the car. also make sure the battery is secured properly, vibration isn't good for them at all.
