2000 Ford Focus electric locks/acuator failure recurring problem

Electric door locks acuator failed first time in 3/2006. Was able to lock all doors manually. Front driver's door acuator replaced and recall for rear passenger door latch corrosion (recall work) done at same time on the left rear passenger door.
In 6/2006 acuators/elec. door locks failed again. This time the front passenger acuator was replaced also along with dr's front door again.
In 8/2007 locks failed 3rd time. was able to manually lock 3 doors but not the drivers door. The fuse was blown, replaced and all elec. locks working.
5/2009 Electric door locks fail again. Able to manually lock all doors except for the drivers door. They replaced the drivers door acuator again. When we went to pick up the car, they checked the locks with us present. They did not work! They did more diagnostics and found the fuse blown, replaced fuse, it blew again. They found the left rear passenger door lock acuator was drawing more current than all the other doors. The aucator on the left rear door was found to be faulty. Instead of replacing, they disconnected the power to that door. After retesting, found all other doors to be operable. We will manually need to lock that left rear door. They want us to see how things go for awhile, and say that if none of the other locks fail again, they will replace the left rear acuator and all should be fine. What do think about this continual problem? Can you please advise? These acuators are not cheap to replace and since this seems chronic, I'm wondering if there could be a "mechanical" problem causing the electrical failure or if there's anything else that should be checked. Thanks for your help. Kathi

I would follow their recommendation as I had the same problem with my car. They unhooked the power to that door and it was fine. The problem was a short in the wiring in the door that was causing the problem. So maybe get them to check the wiring in the door as well.

It sound's to me like the shop is on the right track... ford door lock actuators are junk. electrical components will burn out if ran over or under the required current. if 1 door draws alot it takes away from the others.i would do exactly what the shop says... theyre not steerin' ya wrong, good luck!

The electric door locks will not unlock all the way thay try but will not go all the way up

your door acuator is failing, you can try taking the door panel off and lubing it but most time you have to replace it, and to replace it you have to take the door panel off, with the windstar's the acuator is seprate from the latch so it should'nt cost to much.

A non working rear door acuator.

It is a fairly simple job, pull the panel off, a couple screws on the bottom under tabs, then a couple more behind the door pull or armrest, and the plastic tabs that hold the panel on in the middle, pop it off and lift it up past the lock, The lock can be disconnected at the wire and it be disabled. It is a little tricky to twist it out but it will come out. A couple bolts hold it in. Hope this helps. ,,,, Forgot to tell you, take off your watch and pull the plastic down only what you need, and don't get near the black stuff. It is sticky!

Driver's electric door lock will not lock or unlock driver's door. All the rest of the doors, lock or unlock. Driver's door still makes the noise of the motor lock.

The acuator rod may have come disconnected from the lock cylinder, you would need to remove the door panel to look and see.

2000 Ford Focus automatic door locks quit working. Replaced Central locking module, but still does not work. All of the doors will only work manually. Remote works to open trunk only - will not work on...

check fuse 63 first.

Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
  • Binding latch mechanisms
  • Binding linkage
  • Misaligned door
  • Central junction box fuse 63 (20A)
  • Damaged wiring harness
  • Loose or corroded connection(s)
  • Circuit
  • Door lock switch
  • Door lock actuator

It could also be your GEM (generic electronic module) which is expensive as it controls a lot of stuff. A scan tool can be used to cehck for fault codes from the GEM.

1999 - 2000 ford winstar sel power locks very weak ...hardly work work erratically...driver and passenger locks do not lock or unlock automatically.....8-(

On the 2000 Windstar that I was working on, the casing for the door lock actuators had split and the lock knob on the top of the door would twitch when I hit the button, but would not lock or unlock fully. I replaced the door lock actuators (in stock at my local dealership) and cleared up the problem. Also check the bushings that link the rods inside the doors. They are plastic and occasionally wear out
