Check your inertia switch and press the button on it for a couple of seconds. This part cuts out the fuel pump in collisions and sometimes just the right bump closing the trunk or door will trip it. This part is usually in the trunk on most cars.

I have a 1990 Grand Marquis and when I have my key in the ignition I can start it up no problem but when I turn the car off it won't go backwards and when I have the key out I can still start the car...

Don't worry. No respectable thief would care about your mercury-they're all after Hondas!
You could buy a new key cylinder and have it installed. Or maybe it is just part of the locking mechanism binding or stuck. As it stands, you have a secret, magic key. Only you know how to start your car. Some randy kids happening by, looking for a joy ride from someone stupid enough to leave their keys in the ignition, would only glance in your car and seeing no key, would keep right on going. You, wise old you, took your key with you! lol. Good luck.

Done cars have a kill switch if they are low on oil. Check your oil. If the oil is good, it may be the ignition switch.

It may be a bad ignition switch.

Any warning lights on, on the instrument panel? Check engine light? Or, they come on after the stall?

I would try WD-40, spraying down beside the key with a spray nozzle on the end before I took it to a repair shop or pulled the steering wheel.

Have you checked that you have power to the coil on cranking? You may also want to check wether you have a good strong spark at the spark plug.It could be an ignition module breaking down.If you have no power to the coil you may need to change the ignition relay. Its close to the battery.
