With the speedometer it could be a bad sending unit located on the left side of the transmission near the cv axle. or that the guage is faulty, or a loose connection. your transmission is a AX4N Metric if it's an automatic. the sending unit is a dealer only item and costs about 60 dollars it is not cable driven but has an electrical harness to it. as far as the hard steering it could be that your power steering pump is bad, you have a blockage in your rack and pinion unit, or there is air in the system

What cause the speedometer to stop working on a 1998 ford contour?

I think you should treat yourself to a new vehicle Joe. You are just chasing faults on this one! It is well past its sell by date.

The most common reasons a Ford Contour speedometer isn't working are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS), a faulty speedometer, or an electrical issue.

Radio fuse blew, speedometer quit working. After replacing fuse the speedometer is very sluggish (goes up fast down slow)

You may need a new Vehicle Speed Sensor. It is located on the Transmission on the Passenger side out-put shaft housing.

Ac quit working right after speedometer quit working around 60 mph. the rpms after i got off the interstate started to jump and my steering wheel seemed hard to turn

Hello, The reason why it was hard to steer was the engine wasn't running. The rpm, seedo, air condition, power steering does work if the engine has died. First check to see the belts are on the pulley and rolls in the engine carpment. If they are on and not broken then you other problem.

Will you car start, if doesn't. You could have run out of fuel?. Power steer pressure valve is faulty, broke a timing belt, run out of oil and the engine quit working. Engine got hot and stopped.

If it not starting, call a wrecker have them take to a garage of your choice. GB...stewbison

My speedometer does not work as well as my odometer-i checked fuses and they look fine-what is it?

It is most likely the speed o meter cable has worn out.
This cable is located on the inside of the front left tire. On the inside of the wheel you should be able to see it, and unscrew it. Then follow it up to the back of your speed o meter. The cable will go through the firewall, and should have some sort of rubber protecting the cable from wearing through on the metal of the vehicle. These cables can be strung through many different ways. But all speedometer cable are attached to the inside of the left front wheel and end up inside the dash, attached to the back of your speedometer component.

If the 15 amp fuse #20 in under the hood is good, suspect the headlight switch is bad.

1998 ford taurus

It's an electrical element, so it can go out. Shouldn't be hard to replace. In my 1999 Taurus SE OHV the inertia switch is lining of the trunk on the passenger's side well.

1998 ford taurus problem

Your Power Steering pump is were the noise comes from, the system fluid must be flushed until it's clean and the PS Pump replaced, around $300 to fix.
