I am presently running of the rear tankas my front tank fuel pump is shot. I have been to that if I replace one fuel pump I will have to replace both at the sam time. Is this correct and if so why?
That is not always the case. most often times the reason most mechanics change both is only to prevent a problem down the road because 80% of the time if one pump fails it tends to weaken the other pump. if you don't have any problems with starting then the rear pump should not get replaced. just change your fuel filters regularly and there should be nothing to worry about just replace the bad front pump and save some cash
No u can replace one pump at a time, worked in a ford dealer 20 years, never heard of replacing them as a pair, sounds like one of those urban legends.
NO its correct, they just say that cuz its labvor itensive, kinda like a prevenative thing...there are 2 different pumps, which runs on same wire leads, thus the first one is innoperable and the 2nd is fine....sometimes with older pumps the abuse the pump might substain while replacing the other coulkd damage it.. highly unlikely....tell them to change the first pump and save the bs....Unless you want a newer, maybe more reliable pump...and an extra to set around in your garage....
good luck friend.
hope this was helpful

Thank you. That's exactly what I had figured, but this came from a highly respected source, so I had to ask. It just didn't make sense with the warrantiy offered on the individual pump.
I made this a clarification request becuase I am just going to say that I am a sensible person during these economic times and what mechanics will tell you is you have to replace both to make more money. Now, on some Ford trucks there is a external line check valve from pump to pump and some are connected integrally as one complete system. If one pump is more powerful it will run more fuel to the back tank and cause a surge in fuel flow and will make your motor run to rich. Now, if you have a check valve you can get away with just replacing one fuel pump but you now know what can happen. If you replace one clean your check valve and make sure to mark the flow of the checkvalve with a piece of tape and an arrow to signal the flow to the back tank. The difference between the check valve which is 25 dollars and the fuel pump which is integral in some is 250 dollars. So if it's an integral unit you will possibly have to replace both; I know it kinda sounds bad but that's a Ford for you. If you replace them make sure to replace your fuel filter too becuase that's just good practice.
