check the vehicle spped sensor on the transmission, if that does work, it may be the gear on the differential that has come apart. that gear is plastic and does break. if this is the case, there is a way to remove the differential and replace the plastic gear, not the transmission.
SOURCE: cannot find dipstick to check transmission fluid
There is no "dipstick for the VW Beetle transmission". This is a dealer check/repair item. The unit is typically sealed, but can have a leak if the seal on top of the transmission fails. About a $700 repair. This happened on my 1998 VW New Beetle.

your condensor fins could be blocked by leaves or other debris on the outside. this component is located right behind the radiator. there could also be an overcharge or under charge in the system. make sure that when you charged the system that you used a good set of gauges to check the system pressures. Also check and make sure that there is not a blockage somewhere in the lines, Usually if there is there is a fine layer of ice surrounding it.

this can be an electrical problem or it may be the plastic gear in the differential. First of all check all of the fuses. On top of the battery and on the drivers side dash.
Your husband can the job without too much trouble. Your issue is a "speed sensor". The transmission has a sensor in it that controls the speedometer, usually held by 1 bolt, and has a wire clip attached.
How do i know the fuse are bad
