1996 Jeep Cherokee Country Logo
Anonymous Posted on May 17, 2009

My Dad has a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 102,000 miles & at any speed (not every time) if you tap the brakes, the front end starts to shimmy & is difficult to get it to quit. I thought it might be the steering stabilizer shock. It was safety inspected a short time ago with no problem or loose parts found. Any ideas? Thanks

Does it continue to shake after you let up off the brakes?

You need to install a heavy duty stabalizer shock and ditch the stock one. Then if you still have it your front tires are shot and it doesn't matter how much tread is on them. You can try to balance and rotate, but the solution for me was brand new all terrain tires, smooth as silk since then.

I would say that you have WARPED DISC BRAKE ROTORS which is the beginning and possibly all of your problem. It he suspension such as STRUTS are weak, that will elevate the problem. Hope this helps.

I have a 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. There is a "violent" vibration that occurs only when you are going 40-60 MPH and you hit a bump or pot hole on the highway. The front end begins to...

Vibration from about 40-60 mph is usually attributed to wheel balancing, but the onset when you hit a bump seems to indicate play in the steering linkages (tie rods etc) or suspension members and stabiliser bar rubbers but you had that all checked out, that brings us back to the wheel balancing.

Try gently tapping the starter motor with a hammer or bar. There may be a bad contact in the sollenoid or the starter motor brushes worn to their limit. Tapping may give you a tempory fix if the problem lies in the starter motor.

That and other bushings and idler arms worn. I would suggest a free inspection somewhere for them to show you what needs repaired.

Life expentancy of 1996 grand jeep cherokee engine

If the engine doesnt smoke to much and if you dont have to add much oil between oil changes and you cant hear any unusal noises from the engine you should be able to run that car for many more miles. My dad has a 92 Jeep Cherokee and he over 300,000 miles on it and it still goes as long as you take care of it with regular oil changes you should have no problems
