The gear shift is locked in park and doesn't release now for some reason. So every time I start up the car, I have to use the spare key and release the shift lock by inserting the spare key into the shift lock release over ride thing. Why? Why suddenly do I have to do this? I have 120,000 miles an otherwise no issues with the car. IS there a way for me not to have to insert the key into the gear shift release thing EVERYTIME?
There should two brake switches located above the brake petal, one is designed to activate the rear brake lamp relay, the second would be the park/neutral safety switch which may be defective and failing to activate the shift handle release relay. You can test this by first turn the ignition key forward then jump the two wires behind the switch, you should then hear the transmission shift handle lock release. If this is heard, the switch has failed and requires replacement.

u will need to check and make sure the brake lights work, the shifter is tied to the brake light switch, if the brake lights don't work or the brake pedal is not pushed a gear shifter lock out is engaged, this is a Federally mandated safety feature.

Theres a transmission cooling sensor and somtimes the wire comes loose from other repairs being done around it. or its just out. its on the left side sitting on the tranny. THATS WHY your d4 light is blinking

Inside the center console, on the side of the shifter, there is a neutral safety switch. You can replace it, or remove it. If you remove it, you will always be able to shift the gear, even with the car off, so its something to think about. But it can be done.
