Toyota echo misaligned steering pump - 2004 Toyota ECHO

Have you checked for the power steering pump as some of the Echo's did have power steering fitted as an option?
Here's a quick test for steering issues. Start the engine. When the car is NOT moving, turn the steering from fully left all the way to the right and back again. If this is easy you have power steering. Listen as you do it. If it squeals it could be a belt, a pump or the rack itself.
If there is no squeal the problem is somewhere in the suspension links or, as yours is front wheel drive, the issue could also be the CV joint in the drive shafts.

Sounds like you have a wire in the steering column that is shorting when you turn left but goes back to close to normal when you turn back to straight. Check the wiring harness coming out of the steering column.

It sounds like you have a wiring or connector problem in the steering column. I'm surprised your mechanic did not think to check for that.

There is a pressure relief valve in the pump that allows excessive pressure to bleed out and so not lock up the pump. This is spring loaded so I would be checking the spring tension as the noise may be the valve vibrating from repeated unloading of the pressure more rapidly than it should . It will go when the steering is being turned but will reappear when the wheel movement is stopped . As power steering pumps are the same as sump pumps ( 2 spur gears in a case ) they are mostly un repairable as when the case is worn there is excessive clearance between the teeth and the body and the teeth of the gears will have excessive back lash . As one gear is on a shaft and the other gear is driving from the pulley any misalignment will cause problems as the gears will tend to be out of mesh. It is always best to replace a pump with a new item and not reconditioned as they are seldom repaired correctly.

Under the steering wheel

take off passenger side tire remove the plastic housing and you will get access to the water pump you have to slack up 2 bolts and you should be o.k

Look at the amount of power steering fluid in your power steering pump.
If it is low, then add until a normal level.

If you don't know how to check or add fluid correctly get help in doing so.

If this does not help, then have the Power Steering Pump Tested by a mechanic.
