And radio stays on when exiting

Do you have electric locks in the vehicle? One test to do is turn on the car's headlights and open the door. You should hear a chime when you open the driver door. One other thing is to unlock the doors with the remote if you have a remote open the driver door, get in the car but don't put the key in the ignition. The doors might relock after 15-20 seconds. This proves that the door signal open is not being processed. Just tell me what model VW and what year and if you have electric locks and I'll help you.

Just because the headlight warning comes on does not mean that the interior light is on the same circuit through the door switch.
There are also some perameters that can be set using a scan tool from the dealer, or what's known as a Vag-Com that many VW owners have.

you have a bad drivers door latch, the micro switch inside is not telling the computer that the latch has been opened which would normally mean the door is open.

There is a known issue with the wiring harness in the doors. It's possible that the passenger door also has a bad harness (assuming they swapped out the one in the driver's door) Is that a correct assumption? It may still be related to your original problem too. I've heard of disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes to reset the electrical (door switches). You should def give that a try - it's free.
Also check out the forums at www.tdiclub.com - those guys know their VW TDI's...

It's the switch on the door frame that detects when your door is open. VW's are notorious for this problem. It either needs to be cleaned or replaced. Definitely try cleaning it first. It might be stuck in the "door closed" position.
