I have a 95 Jetta that starts hard and once it starts it runs ok in first but after I try to switch to second it starts to putter out and if I push in clutch and feather the gas ever so slightly it will stay on but not for very long? This all started after some rain that when I went through a puddle it completely died. I have already replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump relay.
You either have bad plug wires or water got in the intake like billie said and is playing havic on your mass air flow sesor. Test the plug wires by squirting some water on them when the car is running (we are looking for like a spray bottle squirt not to much).
If nothing changes ( you will be able to tell the car will wana die or you will see them grounding out a bit) then you can try cleaning the mas, or just replacing it.
Also check your air filter while your in there as well might need to be replaced now :)
Good luck

it sounds to me like water got in the air intake....and could of damage the engine within.......can you notice any visible damage....in the air filter area?
