1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Supercharger coupler

I ws told the coupler(s) in my supercharger is going bad. It sounds like like something is grinding when I turn the engine off and also sound like a bunch of marbles banging around in it. they are inexpensive, but how difficult to fix?

  • Anonymous May 15, 2009

If i were to have the bearings replaced could i remove the supercharger and have it done, but is there a cover plate that could cover it until they got fixed?? would it work??

The rattle you are/were hearing is typical on the Eaton blowers. After they get some miles on them, the coupler wears out and the holes become ob-longed or out of round which causes the rattle you are hearing.
Usually at idle you can hear it very clearly.
I have changed a few, and they are pretty simple to change. Just take off the supercharger belt, then you may have to remove your alternator bracket, depends on which years, drain the supercharger oil with a spray bottle sprayer (it does stink badly) then just remove the 10 or so bolts that hold the snout to the housing. Remember to keep track of where they go, some are different lengths.
You may have to use a rubber mallet, or your hand to hit the snout around to break the gaskets loose. Pull off the old black hockey puck looking thing (coupler) clean out the snout, attach new coupler, then reassemble and put new supercharger oil back in, and your rattle will be gone, at least for another 100k miles.
Best place to get a coupler is at,

Costs about 30, plus the few bottles of oil for the supercharger.

Most likely cause of the noises you discribe are the bearings in the supercharger. You would be better off buying a remanufactured supercharger rather than attempting to replace the bearings yourself. Good luck.

I haven't heard of a cover plate being available.

I think in order to get the right bearings, you would have to take it apart and get the numbers off of them. Unless you can find someone that has a listing for the bearings. Good luck. Hope this helps out.

How to replace supercharger drive coupler 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

The coupler is not the issue. You need to pull the whole unit and check the vanes.

Would replacing a power steering pump in a 2002 Grand Prix GTP Supercharger cause the SuperCharger belt to break.

No.

The supercharger belt is on the main drive, the water pump is on the accessory drive. Provided that they are both properly installed of course.

Yes I have a 1998 pontiac grand prix gtp on the supercharger, there is a pulley on the end of it!. Does this pulley have a bearing in it!

The pulley itself does not have a bearing in it. The shaft however that the pulley is pressed onto does, inside the snout.

2000 Grand Prix GTP supercharger fluctuates when accelerating

There is no wastegate.

Change the spark plugs and pay special attention to the plug on bank 3. Look for physical damage on the electrode...cracked, bent etc.
Use Autolite 605's copper core gapped to .055" and NEVER run less than 92 octane.

How supercharger oil is need for the supercharger, 1997 Grand Prix GTP?

The oil should be changed every 30K miles according to the Pontiac manual.
However, it is best to change it sooner or whenever you don't know when the last change was done.

Boost issues

No leak, it may be time for a service to your supercharger. There is maintance that most people don't know about and the bearing to the supercharger's wear out and then has play. The bad things is with the play the lobes in the supercharger starts to rub against the housing and then the tolerace clearance is larger then when the car was new. Long story short, time to have your supercharger rebuilt before it fails and kills the engine too. There is an other way you can look in too, here is there web page http://cartuning.ca. Good luck

Remove supercharger on pontiac GTP 1999

Technically you are supposed to (change the s/c gasket) but if your careful and don't tear it, you don't really need to.

Be sure to inspect the yellow coolant o-rings.

The gasket thickness isn't going to matter at all on the supercharger gasket.

Perfect oportunity to install that Intercooler you always wanted ;)
