it's not hard, but you could set off the air bag. disconnect the battery, pump the brake a couple times to remove any stray voltage, then remove the steering wheel to access the switch. or you could (by hand) twist a drywall screw into the broken switch and shut it off that way.still broken but no longer active
Nothing will happen including air bag operation in the future. Air bag system is disabled by the computer any time the light is on. Probably have damaged sensor wires or sensor in the front due to previous front end damage. If a body shop repaired your car, take it back and demand they fix your car properly as this is part of the job. NOTE: Before installing the air bags be sure to disconnect the battery "and" remove the air bag fuse and wait at least 3 minutes before working with the system. Safety first !!!
Chances are it's the airbag clockspring mechanism behind the horn in the steering wheel, they wear out and cause the light to flash. There is no reset for the light. If it's on, you have a short or a bad connection. The clockspring is available at most auto parts stores and installs with a few screws. Make sure you disconnect the battery before you do anything related to the airbag because you don't want it to go off while you are working on it.
the yellow light is warning you that a problem exsists with the abs. unless you are experienced with brakes and abs would highly suggest you take it to a shop.
To your problem with the air bag, I was driving an 07 GMC Sierra 1500 that was doing the same thing. Next thing the charges went on the seat belt tensioners, luckily I was parked because the belts gave me a pretty violent **** back. Turns out the SDM was corroded and caused the action, and there was no reason the air bags didn't deploy as well other than pure luck. I would say get it checked by GM, you don't want to mess around with safety systems. You can visually inspect the integrity of the SDM, it's located under the driver's seat, unfortunately I think the seat has to be removed to see it. Mine had a calcium like build up all over the external casing.
it is the sensor located under the dashboard area. you can buy another one off the internet for 50.00. with instructions on how to remove the old one and then send it back for your deposit back. however, my light also comes on and off when the weather changes. i would ignore it unless it stays on for a few days. all it means is your airbag isnt working. i lived most my life without airbags.
OBDII scanners for the home DIY guy only scan powertrain codes ... and not body codes .... which is where the airbag code(s) would go. Scanners that do both are expensive. I would call a local auto parts place that advertises that they will scan for free ... but ask them if their scanner can read body codes related to the air bag. If they say yes ... I would take it to them and to narrow down your troubleshooting ... since the airbag light can go on for a bunch of reasons and you do not want to just throw parts at it.
