Had the same problem before on my 04 Neon SXT...camshaft sensor is on left side of engine block, take out the battery and to the left of it (face car) is the camshaft position sensor. To change it you'll have to move a few hoses but its plan to see there on the left side of the engine...pretty easy remove and replace. Fixed my problem of car not going above 2k RPM when i replaced the sensor.

try autozone.com to see if they have your car listed for diagrams pictures and step by step instructions if your car is not listed then try your local library they have all the car manuals and even copy them for you

on a neon the cam sensor is located at the drivers side of the engine on the end of the head. it mounts directly over the end of the front camshaft. it is about 3 inches wide and about 2 and a half inches tall. its made of black plastic and has a wire conector in the back of it. these very comonly leak oil so be careful of the o ring and cleaning the mounting surface.

If it revs up and down you need retrain the car to idle. I know it sounds crazy but you need to ask dealer or local shop the steps to do it.

disconnect the negative battery cable. the cmp sensor is located on the left end of the cylinder head. move thebrake booster hose and electrical wires out of the way to access the cmp sensor. disconnect the sensor plug by pushing the locking tab back toward the firewall. remove the 4 bolts from sensor and lift out sensor. remove the trox bolt which holds the target magnet to camshaft. when installing target magnet be sure to line up holes to dowels on end of camshaft. torque torx bolt to 30 in-lbs. be sure to install new o-ring on sensor and torque bolts to 80 in-lbs. Hi Kt BC, camshaft sensor is timing advance, check your crankshaft sensor, you can also get your coil and ignition module checked to make sure they are good as well. Also, however strange it sounds you have to look at the wiring harness that is on the lower drivers side by the transmission. often in the neon your transmission wears through the casing in the wires and can cause them to ground out and make the car stall r not start. It is worth a look
We double checked everything and the timing belt was a little lose. We changed it and it started right up :) I took my car for a drive and its all good so far!
I'm glad to hear it
