Have 2001 f250 5.4 triton v8. lights and guages went nuts battery went dead. was told battery was bad and needed replacing. put in new battery. drove home had to turn off head lights to make it new battery dead recharged battery next day samething.recharged and put in wifes vehicle battery is doing great. Then was told alternator .So did that another new battery same thing okay maybe a bad new alternator so go get another New alternator same thing . What in the world is thproblem. I'm a poor white woman and I desperatly need some good advice.
Could have a blown fusible link or a regular fuse . The wires that go to the alternator need to have B+ voltage . Does the charge indicator light on the instrument cluster light when you turn the key tp the on position . Using a volt meter test the heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator , does it have B+ voltage ? The yellow with white stripe should have B+voltage as well . So should the lite green with red stripe . Without battery voltage at these wires the alternator will not work .
Make sure the cables are both good if they have a spot that feels flimsy the wires inside are likely corroded and the current is not running through it properly. a simple charging system check would be recommended.

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.
To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

Charge the batteries. take a Reading to make sure that you are getting almost 14v to both batteries. If it is not charging then take the alternator back off and have them check it. you might have bought a bad one. There is a way to test the glow plus with out taking them out. ( Take a piece of wire long enough to reach all the glow plugs from the battery. unplug the glow plug wire.If you touch the end of the glow plug with the hot wire it should make a little spark. if no spark then the glow plug is bad. do this to each one, but one at a time)

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.

i had this exact same problem ... under the hood onthe left side of the firewall where your starter solenoid and fuseable links are there is a little container type thing that holds a 20 amp fuse that fuse is probably blown the little container is on the firewall right below the fuseable links
