Verify the hand-held transmitter is operative.
Prepare for programming the universal transmitter by erasing all three channels (hold down the two outside buttons until the red light begins to flash [20-30 seconds]). Release both buttons.
Select one of the three universal transmitter channels to be programmed by pressing the desired button
Hold the end of the hand-held transmitter 25-51 mm (1-2 in) from the front surface of the universal transmitter so that the red light can still be seen
Use both hands to press the hand-held transmitter button and the desired button on the universal transmitter. Do not release either button.
Hold down both buttons until the red light on the universal transmitter flashes, first slowly and then rapidly. Release both buttons when the rapid flashing begins. The universal transmitter has successfully learned the new frequency signal and can be used in place of the hand-held transmitter(s).
If the hand-held transmitter appears to program the universal transmitter but does not open the garage door, the garage door opener may have a code protected or rolling code feature.
To operate, simply press the appropriate button on the universal transmitter. The red light is on while the signal is being transmitted.
IF THE GARAGE OPENER HAS ROLLING CODES---
program as above then------
Train the garage door opener receiver to recognize the universal transmitter.
Remove the cover panel from the garage door opener receiver.
Locate the training button on the garage door opener receiver. Location and color of the button may vary by garage door opener manufacturer. Refer to the garage door opener instruction manual or owner literature.
Press the training button on the garage door opener receiver for 1-2 seconds.
Press the programmed universal transmitter button for as long as the universal transmitter red light flashes (1-2 seconds). Release the button and re-press the button to confirm that the universal transmitter is trained to the receiver.
The garage door opener should recognize the universal transmitter.

Before you do this you might want to try fresh gear lube. On Ford products they use a synthetic additive in the rear and not in the front 4x4 axle.
The next thing would be to determine if it is a wheel bearing or a pinion bearing. You have to pull the axles and eliminate them as the problem. You might get lucky and not need to do the pinion.
The technical part of shimming the pinion gears with replacing the pinion bearing is about the worst part of the job. You won't know about the gears until you see them. You will need extra shims on hand.
It is a moderate job for two people. If you have all the parts it can be done in a day.

SOURCE: my hood wont close on a 98 mercury mountaineer
if it doesn't lock then i would look at the latch assembly and spray it with wd-40 they get stuck because of rust and corrosion. also take a look at the handle inside the vehicle they also get stuck in the pulled out position and causing the hood to not lock. give it a push to insure it is in the full depressed position. good luck
SOURCE: hood release does not work on my 97 mercury
if you can get to the bolts that hold the lock in place from the front and bottom you can open the hood and replace the bad cable then remount the locking bracket

My husband had the same problem with his 02 Mountaineer about 6 months ago. I read somewhere that if you take WD40 & spray the door locks it should stop. We tried it & so far it's worked. Good luck!
