Front driveshaft joints worn, front ring/pinion gears or bearings worn, front locking mechinism faulty or binding. If you put the car in 4x4 and the car fails to move, as in neutral type feeling, then all your torque is going to the front, something is not locked in and its just spinning. Transfer case faulty....

Testimonial: "it will move in 4wd but it sounds like a something is just tumbling around but only in 4wd just fine in 2wd"

something caught in front driveshaft, like a can tied on to a string as been caught in it, a broken off branch stuck in there from offroading, still bad bearings can cause it if its loose from its housing, if your front end has a limited slip diff, then some clutches can become dislodged/broken and be flopping around in the housing, hub locks could be worn. If something sounds like its tumbling around, then there probably is. How about your transmission/thranscer case mounts? Ill look at the transmissoin to transfer cas adapter, as these can be silent untill transfer case is engaged, adding stress.

it is the ext ls 4.2 L transmission has all the torque and power as it did before nothing changed there 4wd still works H n L the noise is only when i switch from 2wd to 4wd so what is the high end component cost to repair and low end

your talking 1000's of dollars if you have to replace the transfer case or front axles and housing. Still sounds like your input shaft gear is broken/stripped where it contacts drive gear.

SOURCE: rattle steering wheel

Sounds like your intermediate steering shaft. Its the slip shaft that runs thru the firewall. They have a slip-stick condition that makes a horrible rattle that you can feel in the wheel. Its a pretty easy repair. Just make sure the steering wheel dosen't spin while you are changing it.

Good Luck

SOURCE: My 98 s10 is stuck in 4 wheel drive low.

Pull the kick panel on the passenger side. there is a small box mounted there that is the computer that controls the actuator for the 4wd system. this is notorious for problems due in fact that the connector likes to pull out and away from the module. I had the same problem and the solution is simple.. take a long zip tie and get it between a few of the wires and around the module. tie it in and have a nice day.. it wont come off or try to pop out anymore and you should have no issues getting into 2wd, 4wd h, 4wd L.

It goes in all the 4 wheel drive but want go in 2 wheel drive and a navigator have light inside that show that its in two wheel drive 1998

The vast majority of vehicles that have 2 wheel and 4 wheel drive will only light up something on the dash when in 4 wheel drive.(They also light up 4 wheel drive low if you have it) I've been driving 4 wheel drives for 25 years and have yet to see one that lights up something for 2 wheel drive.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD V8 4-wheel and there is a "rattling" sound coming from area of the left front tire.

Is this the same problem you were having a year ago, or was that a bad tire ?
Usually a rattle is caused by something loose, such as a strut mount or a ball joint.

Rattle under engine while driving

Could be possibly be a loose heat shield. Also check alternator pulley/decoupler.

Jingling noise? 1990 chevy k2500

If you had front disc brakes changed recently, then more than liklely someone forgot to put your anti rattle clip in with the installation. if you can stand the rattle it's not life threatning. if no brake job recently, then open the hood and look for something loose that would be rattling.

Steering Columin Housing

it could be the wiring rattled loose or a nut or a screw has come loose inside the steering column, you might be able to get at it by loosening the plastic at the bottom of the dash below the steering column. or the worst thing could be something has broke loose..
