When I start the car the ABS light comes on, and I would drive about 50meters and the power steering light comes on and when I apply the breaks the pedal would be stiff and at times vibrate and when I turn the steering is stiff, Ive checked the fuse on the battery and the oil level on the power steering box, all is well. please assist, from ZA
You may have a vacuum leak.
Hi. The only link between abs and power steering that springs to mind is the steering wheel angle sensor but you really need at least a code read of the systems as the faults may be unrelated. I think spending a few quid at the local garage and getting a proper insite into what is going on will be money well spent. The pedal vibration will probably turn out to be the abs activating on low speed braking as it is seeing a low speed signal from one wheel sensor. This can be caused by an abs speed sensor being improperly gapped or a damaged sensor pick up ring among other things, Again without some real details or codes from the ecu its hard to give a real diagnosis. A visual inspection of the wheel sensors and pick up rings may reveal something - you don't need to know exactly what your looking at just that they all look the same and clean, no missing teeth on the pick up rings or cracks. If you get at least a code read and post the results we might be able to delve a little deeper.
Testimonial: "Thanks very much Bardney, infact Ive been trying to get hold of the local vw garage to book it in for a diagnose, unfortunately not a lot of garages this site have a code readers. Something very strange and dangerous happened yesterday, I started the car and the warning light didnt come on as usual, however when I drove the car accelerated on its own when I change gears, when I hit on a clutch to change to any gear it hits a high rev! and when I engage the brakes it stops...could this be a faulty/errored computer box?"
SOURCE: oil light comes on and beeps
Changing oil can't hurt. When was the last time you had it changes? How many miles on that engine?Changing approximately ever 3,000 miles is common practice. The engine oil light and the automatic transmission are two seperate problems. Engine oil light come on because the sensor reads a low oil preasure. If the engine is not worn then the light can be caused by the sensor getting cloged up (from dirty oil ) and not reading the preasure correctly.

most likely Steve is correct about the sensors, they are the most common problem, if you tinker with cars yourself you can try them at home first. jack up one corner at a time ...the sensors just push in to a copper shim in the hub. move back and forth a few times with pliers and they will come right out. look over the wires to be sure there is no damage < chunks of ice and froxen snow are know to cause broken wires> if wires look ok spray clean the reluctor wheel on c/v joint and the sensor itself. if you see metal fuzz looking stuff on the sensor ,that is junk from your brakes and needs cleaned off. the metal dust causes the trigger in sensor to malfunction. do all 4 corners one at a time then drive the car if abs light and flashing brake light go out your fixed but still should have codes cleared to make sure there is no there problems. if this doesn't fix it best bet is to have a dealer you trust to look it over , brakes are important. once abs light is out see if you pass your inspection, if not ask why then post on here what they tell you and we'll address that . good luck.
SOURCE: 99 jetta check engine light on, runs fine, speedometer not workin
o2 sensors will put your check-engine-light on. it is attached to the exhaust (closest to the motor)and rusts-out sometimes. you could try to fix it by buying the o2 sensor and use a socket-set to see if it loosens. i 'm not a mechanic but have had the issue, in the past, with the jetta II's and a 1997.the guys at vw dealers are great with info, if your a hands-on kinda guy/girl.

SOURCE: Oil pressure light is blinking.
It's very possible a coincidence and that the flashing oil light is the oil pressure switch. I'd check it out immediately to make sure there's sufficient oil flowing through the engine. Merely jump starting the car shouldn't have knocked anything loose so to be on the safe side, assume there's an oil pressure issue. You were right to not use the car in the interim.
