It sounds like you might have a bad alternator. You can't always trust you gauges. Jump it off again and check the voltage at the battery. You should have 14 volts. If it is less then that you have a bad alternator. Good luck.
a Scan Tool will read your codes. even if the light is off it puts codes in history so they still can be pulled up for diagnostics. I would start there, You can get it done for free at AutoZone,CarQuest etc.
I have a 97 ford explorer sport 4x4. When i drive at a constant speed it's fine but when i let off the gas I hear a grinding noise. if i put in nutral as soon as i hear it the noise quits areif I shoot the gas to it it quits. What could it be?
