97 Nissan 200sx cranks, won't turn over

I changed my distributor cap and rotor today due to a "sputtering while warm" issue. It turned out that my old rotor's bolt hole was messed up and it would "flop around" when it got to a certain temperature.

I initially just tightened the bolt on the old rotor, which fixed the sputtering at temperature, but figured I may as well get a new cap and rotor. After I put on the new stuff the car would crank but not turn over. I put the old cap and rotor back on, same thing. I cranked it with the distributor cap off and the rotor moves, also cranked it with the rotor and housing off and the crank angle sensor moves.

I checked for spark and I'm getting none. I figure that somehow I killed the distributor itself -- I'm a handy guy, but my mechanic knowledge only goes so far as a Haynes manual.

Does this make any sense? Is it possible for me to rebuild the distributor myself? I'm getting an error code (I didn't have one before) but since I can't get the car to Auto Zone to get the code read I don't know what it is.

BTW the engine is a completely stock GA16DE (1.6l)

If it were anything to do with the cap and rotor itself the old one would still work. I don't have a separate plug wire that doesn't go to any plugs.

If you indeed are getting no spark on any plugs, check your plug wire that runs from the rotor to your ignition coil- the one that doesn't go to the engine. Make sure the internal connections didn't pull out and get crushed back in or fall out. Try one of your other plug wires on it and see if it fires- won't run good but you will see difference and be done troubleshooting. Other than that, you bought the rotor button and and rotor as a set right? Make sure the button metal tip is contacting the cap. If you got the wrong one, it may sit too low for the contacts even if it is long enuff. If you were getting spark, I would just say you got the firing order wrong.

I have a 97 dodge average 2.5 v-6 the car attempts to turn over but won't fire, start. I was told by midas it was a spark issue and needed a new distributor. I replaced that still no change

check for spark to make sure the distributor is working. If there is not spark than make sure the distributor is turning. Remove the cap and see if the rotor turns will a helper cranks the engine over. If it is turning than use a test light connected to ground and see if spark comes out of the ignition coil while the engine is being cranked. if there is no spark make sure there is power to the coil. if there is power you may have a defective distributor. if there is no power check fuses.

if the rotor is not turning check to make sure the timing belt is not broken.

You'll need to change the distributor, as the distributor shaft oil seal has gone bad. Without sufficient spark, you'll have no power. Don't forget a new cap/rotor.

97 nissan 200sx 2.0, starts but stalls when I shift to forward. Also when in park and reeve the engine up it misses badly. Took distributor cap off and there was oil inside. Other times I can start it...

There should be no oil in the distributor. Replace it. Oil will cause the spark to go anywhere. Most likely to a ground. The distributor base.

My 2000 Nissan frontier runs great for about 15 minutes then starts sputtering tach starts jumping. Changed distributor cap & rotor button plug wires fuel filter & crank shaft position sensor. What...

I would want to monitor fuel pressure as the engine warms up. But it could also be a coil or ignition module problem, even a relay.
Any chance the check engine light is on ?

if they are getting carcon build up then you have a weak ignition control module and the wrong spark plugs . with the wrong spark plugs it is running and working hard

96 nissan 200sx started and ran rough for 10 sec then died and wont restart. distributor is turning. no fault codes. has good fuel pressure. spark looked weak so i changed cap and rotor. still wont start....

something to ponder over here as iam not sure what could be the problem here but if its a weak spark then it could be module /coil/crank sensor in that order .These problems will not show up as fault codes i dont think as they are working but not to full efficiency
