Saab 900 auto with "Check gearbox" light

I have a 1996 automatic Saab 900. It recently had a "Check engine" light showing and stalled when the accelarator was pressed down past a certain point.

A local garage diagnosed a problem with the air flow sensor and idle control valve. These were replaced. As soon as I drove the car away the "Check gearbox" light started to show and the car is now very sluggish. I am worried that this fault is related to the original fault or perhaps caused by the garage when they carried out the repairs.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Do you think the faults are related, or has the garage done more harm than good?!

Hello. I had the same problem when the Check Gearbox light came on, it would be very sluggish. It turned out to be a small sensor in the transmission that lets the car know what gear it is in. It started to go out slowly and only sometimes would send the information.

    Your transmission range switch is going out I just fixed mine it's 250.00$@ euro parts com

Go to repair-manuals.com and buy the manual..Chilton's Manual is dirt cheap there and u can fit the problem yourself.

Take the vehicle to one of the major Auto parts stores and ask then to connect their scanner to your vehicle and identify the fault code that is stored. That will tell you where to look and what has faulted. Once you get the code you can get the new part there at the store and a Haynes Repair manual on your vehicle to do the repair yourself.

just had to replace the fuel pump on my 1999 Saab 9-3 with 130 K after being frustrated with stalling over the past 6 months. Earlier attempts to fix the problem were to replace the crank sensor and purge valve but that was just a waste of $600.
It's always something with this car unfortunatley!

I would check for fuel pressure first. If the fuel pump is out, it will not throw a code to the computer.

Most common fault is the gearbox position sensor. This is like a neutral safety switch located on the top of the transmission where the shift cable looks up.
