Hi Rita, are there any warning lights on the dash? How long does it run for. starting and running for a second or two would indicate an immobilizer fault and that the key has lost its code with the car That would need to go to a garage. Jon

how did you disconnect the battery, pos first then neg ? or neg first then pos ?
try starting it and after started, hold your rpm at 1500, for about two minutes, then if still running, drive it to get to.speeds of 40 for about 15 minutes, this is to relearn
if not, disconnect your battery, take the pos and neg cable and touch them together and hold for about a minute, then Connect them back, neg.first.then pos, then follow steps above to.relearn.
Try cleaning the throttle valve and idle speed control motor with throttle valve cleaner and then diconnect the battery for 5 minutes and drive it for a few days.
A Toyota will not run with the battery disconnected, it doesn't mean an alternator problem only a voltage and load test can determine that, it is unique to S\some Japanese cars and light trucks.
You don't disconnect anything on today's
vehicles, even with the key on
Put in a new battery, start the car, warm it up
& drive it for awhile & maybe you will get lucky
& it will complete some of the drive cycles & run some
monitors ,you know nothing about & it will be fine
If not, your mechanic friend should be about to stop
by with the bosses scan tool & help you out
my 97 a4 would start and then die, i had it diagnosed as the immobiliser in the dashboard costing about £600 !!! The battery went flat trying to start it so i took it off the car and charged it up, when i put it back on the car before i took it to get fixed i thought i would try it 1 more time and "hey presto" it started and ran and has not missed a beat since ! That was 2 years ago, it was like the computer had re-set itself with the battery removed for charging, i hope this may be of some help.
