Rebuil;t alt not ghargeing there is a black wire from ignition broke in to it has fibers in the wire could it be the problem

the cable in question should 1 be marked and it will run from battery to starter and from alt to battery. ,look for a 2in long black lump in the wires that's the one you need to replace

check for bad ignition switch it sounds like a dead spot

You need to check on the charging current to confirm that the alternator charge is good. Also if the rectifier/regulator is working and in order.please check the link below;

Alternator: Old style alt with two wire plug on top back edge of case with internal regulator.: hot wire from start side of ign switch to a 10 ohm 6watt resistor, to terminal #2 on alt. Jumper wire from B+ large terminal on alt to term #2 on top plug. B+ wire to Battery. (70"s Cadillac wiring)
Distributor : 12volt from "run" side of ignition switch to distributor (using old style HEI dist. with vacuum advance and no computer connections) 12v can also be used to power aftermarket "upgrade" ignition.
Numbers are usually stamped into alt housing but if I remember correctly looking at the back the one on left is #1, right is #2 Battery (B+) is the large wire connection.

The simplest most reliable ever made by any auto maker was the GM 10SI alternator. It has a large stud terminal in the back and a two wire connector in the side. Run a large wire from the battery to the stud on the back. Take the red wire in the connector put a ring terminal on it and attach it to the stud in the back. The white wire in the connector needs to be connected to one side of a small incandescent pilot light the other side of the light should be connected to a 12 volt source that is turned on and off by the ignition switch. If the bulb is off while the car is running and on when it isn't running then the alternator is working. This is simplest charging system anyone ever put in a car. The Ford IVR is similiar but has more wires.

You do not need the stator wire to hook to anything. It normally goes to the voltage regulator to supply the ignition source. The regulator needs 12 and ign which is normally supplied through the stator wire and a wire to alt feild and chassis grnd. The stator after fusebox is tied in with carb elec choke. you can make sure the elc choke and regulator have 12v at ign on and not worry about alt stator
