Car stumbles, hesitates, loses power on Hwy, randomly

Hi, my 1995 Olds 88 runs great. But on some few occasions, for no reason, the car starts to stumble, hesitate, lose power, "check engine" light goes on, and this will continue until the car is stopped. On idle, the engine runs smoothly. The problem goes away when the engine is turned off, then re-started again. "Check engine" light then goes off. Tha car also stumbles and hesitates when starting cold and driving immediately, but corrects itself after a minute.
Is this the injectors? Throttle position sensor? Coil?

Thanks, ccn7, but I have a new fuel filter and air filter.

Thanks, noodle1985,no I haven't checked the electrical ground. Where do I start? Battery connections are good.

I have to clarify that when I start cold, the car runs smoothly until I drive off. It'll stumble for a minute, then correct itself. To avoid this, I have to be easy on the gas as I accelerate.

    Try a new fuel filter.

Car skips at constant speed, loses power, then dies.

Check fuel filter it might need replacing, then have fuel pump checked.

1993 jeep cherokee randomly stumbles power when going down freeway

replace your fuel filter....i had a monte carlo that did the exact same thing....ran great untill i jumped on the hwy with it....come to find out it sat up for a while and rust and crud developed in the gas tank...i should of droped the tank to clean it but i chose to replace the fuel filter every month.....plus its the easiest and cheapest thing to start with....it just seems like if it was your timing it wouldnt run right at all and a fuel pump is usually a part that works or it doesnt work, and if it doesnt work, well, your not gonna go anywhere then.....good luck with it

Sounds like an EGR valve sticking. Start the engine cold and let it warm up. As soon as it starts to hesitate/stumble, pull the vacuum hose off the EGR and if the engine maintains a steady idle, replace the EGR valve. The EGR is sticking intermittently but it won't be long before it sticks all the time and you won't be able to keep the car running when it gets warm. This is an easy diagnosis, removal and replacement for the do it yourself car owners. Please rate me on my answer.

Random misfire

sounds like the coil pack is the primary suspect here ..especially if your miss is migrating to cylinder#2 now....other issue possible...do a compression test...head gasket failure losing compression between #1 and #2 ....also..and specifically for *other user* comment... check function of EGR valve for vacuum leak into intake causing stumble misfire shudder and engine dying issues
