Possible valve cover leaking,at least this is more likely the cause, they make a die that you can use too help determine where it is leaking but some dies require ablack light too see the die,

Check on your top cover gaskets they may leaking oil onto the sides of your engine ,when the engine heats the smell emanates from the oil fumes of the leaked oil.you may also check on the engine breather pipes since lose clips on the same may lead to small a mounts of leakages onto the engine.remember these leakges may be droping on the hot exhaust pipe hence the burning oil smell.

Losing coolant but no leaks on my BMW 5 series 528i. , 2000 model

Look in the radiator for the presence of oil or bubbles. See if water is dripping from the tail pipe. All these indicate the engine is burning the coolant. Look for a blown head gasket or a cracked head.

Hi, i am just wondering when looking at a 2000 BMW 528i, what should i be cautious of? this is my first car. thanks

Hi,I know this is not what you asked but to save making a mistake the AA,RAC,or some one like that, they have a thing where they do a compleat check on the car you wish to buy,if the seller has nothing to hide he wont mind some one looking over the car properly, if you dont want to do that then the best advice I can give is to first make shore that the car in question has all the papper work of eney work that has been done on the car in its life(old mots exc, bills for work done look for eney advicerys from the last mot)service histery is a must, ask the seller if every thing works properly, you want to check the oil it should be a goldy brown, not black, check the engine bay to check if there is eney oil leaks from the engine,(its ok to be dirty but should be dry),If a automatic check the auto-fluid,(it should be a redy coulor and it should not smell like somthing has been burnt),some times with the body work there is repairs that are exceptable wich have been repaird properly, but some are not,(look under the bonnet near the lights just to see if there is eney metal thats been repared, same with the boot.
I hoped that this might inlighten you for just some of the pitfulls,I wish you all the best in finding your car,all the best.

Where is the most common place for a oil leak a BMW 323i

in my opinion the #1 most common place is from the oil filter housing. Stand at the front of the engine bay, look at the right side of the engine block under the intake manifold. If the block is oily, wet, then that's the culprit. There's a $5 oil seal that dries out and can end up causing oil drops on your driveway. The labor for this repair can be several hundred bucks. it takes about 3-4 hours. Other common areas are the valve cover gasket in cars over 100K miles. If you smell oil burning inside the car, when you start it up in the morning, it's likely leaking here and getting on the exhaust manifold where it burns off..
Next place to look is the high pressure hose form the vanos to the oil filter housing. It's a 8" hose with banjo fittings. Over the years they can start to leak a little. Lastly the oil pan gasket can start to leak on cars with high mileage. My 98 323is has had all four over the years. It has almost 200K on it. I've done the oil filter housing gasket and some day will do the rest
The oil filter gasket is the one that leaks the most. It's not hard to do yourself if you are mechanically. There might be youtube videos to help. Good luck.

My Bmw High mileage 320i E90 is having oil leaks problems they have changed the oil gaskets pipes from BMW butelp

clean the engine and check where it is coming from. Is it at the front of the rear> do you smell burning oil when you switch off the engine? Clean an area under the engine compartment and see where the oil is dripping from and get back to us. Typical places for leaks are the valve cover gasket, oil filter housing bracket.

I have a BMW 528i 1996, how do I know what battery to get? Needs a new battery.

Your battery type is dependent on the amount of built in electronics and size of engine.
Usually in cranking amps.
The place you buy them from will know.

100000 mile service checks/replacement parts on a 2000 BMW 528i

If your talking about what would a dealership change, it generally consists of a tune up, including spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, oil change, pcv valve, and fuel filter. Thats also usually when they want to replace the timing belts. There may be one or two other things specific to BMW, but generally thats what you can expect.

I have a coolant leak on my 2000 BMW 528i and now it overheating.

Pressure test cooling system to determine origin of leak. Radiator and coolant reservoirs are common problems. Vehicle is very difficult to purge air from cooling system and may take multiple times of idling until thermostat opens. Sometimes help to rev engine to about 2500 rpm 5-8 times to help build heat and move coolant through system. Must have heater on while performing this task.
