My 1997 Ford Contour GL 4 Cyl 2.0L transmission will not shift into gears properly and when I try to put into drive or reverse the car makes a loud noise and jerks back.

linkage will probally have to be readjusted if your lucky, Get it check out before it gets worse, End does damage to the transmission, If it hasnt happen allready,From trying to force it into gear,
this code indicates a problem with the transmission range selected switch, this switch is on the transmission case where the shift cable attaches, when u select a gear it sends a signal to the computer control that u want lets say Reverse by sensing the range selector switch feedback, replace the switch will most likely cure the code, then clear the code and drive a few miles.
the gears in your trani are not meshing right you will need to take this into a shop since automatic trani's are nothing to play with. they are too intricat to do anything at home
if the nuetral safety was a problem the car would not start at all, sounds like you have a defective engine wiring harness, this is the most common cause of this i have seen while working for Ford.
