Check engine light came on and the error code is 040.4 what is it and can i drive it?

Disconnecting the battery is never a good idea as it breaks the code paring between the key, the BCM / ECM and Immobilizer Module. Always charge a car battery in the car without removing it. Even a dead battery has enough volts to keep the ECM / BCM programming alive. Have all the keys done at the same time. If you only have one key, have another chip key cut and programmed. You don't mention a second key, and we get so many people here who lose their only key and ask how to bypass and hot-wire. The answer to that is "you can't".

Laura, A few places like autozone will scan why the light is on for no charge. Engine light can come on for something as simple as a loose gas cap to something worse as a faulty catalytic converter. Take vehicle into a good shop, have scanned for trouble codes, diagnosed and an estimate for repair. Check the attached links,instruction and guides, Good luck

You need to get the codes that are stored in the cars computer before figuring out what the problem is? The check engine light could be for several different types of problems.

Check engine mean that some system of engine is faulty. Check oil and coolant levels and if they are ok - basically you can drive your car.
Try to find someone with diagnostic scanner for your car to clarify type of error.

The diagnostic code will not clear immediately from the computer memory. It will take a predetermined number of complete warm up and drive cycles without the problem detected to have the diagnostic code disabled. If you want your SES light turned off right away and all codes cleared, you will need to use an OBDII compliant scan tool to reset it. Otherwise just continue to drive the vehicle as usual and monitor your gas mileage and driveability before assuming that the new part fixed the problem.

Turn key on and off twice without starting engine. count flashes, their will be slight hesitation, make one digit after hesitation make second digit.(flashes 5 times hesitates flashes three times hesitates your code is 53) if it countiues to flash, its making second two digit code.

there are no codes that say replace O2 sensors,or remove converter,Thats just somebody's guessing,When it says O2 sensor that tells the mechanic to look for trouble in that area,wiring or faulty readings,And there are four O2 sensors.
