Volvo S80 - Low beam out - Changed bulb & fuses

Low beams (both sides) went out suddenly. Error message said 'Dipped bulb beam failure' or somesuch.

I changed the light bulbs and the driver's side came on (bulb looked bad). The passenger side bulb looked fine, but changed it anyway - NOTHING. Fuses look fine. Even checked that shunt/resistor thing under the dash that I've seen mentioned online. Pulled it out, looked fine, put it back - Nothing (neither lights worked with it out and the driver's side worked when I put it back, so I guess it's ok).

Any other suggestions for cheap fix before Volvo charges me a gazillion to fix it?

Possible bad relay or bad ground. Try tapping the relay with helper watching to see if light flashes.

Where is the fuse for the low beam headlights?

There are 3 fuse boxes in a Volvo S80.

The fuses for the low beam headlights could be in either 3.

Refer to the website below, where it shows a 2012 Volvo S80, which should be similar to the 2008 model for dismantling the fuse box.

Dash says bulb failure dipped beam

The car runs self checks on everything that carries a current as it starts up. It 'thinks' one of your bulbs has gone.

Put your dipped beams on and visually check to see if the bulb has indeed blown. It can however make mistakes if there is a poor connection (emery paper on the contacts and try reinstalling the 'blown' bulb) or even that the load was just 'off' from what was expected.
Chances are though - you just need a new bulb!
