If truck has a ceramic ballist resistor near and connected to coil this could be problem or the crk posistion sensor could be too, i would change ballast first if you have on your truck appx cost $10
indian island,
please read solution again, what i said was look to see if you have a ceramic ballast resistor that is wired in to coil,it is white in color and rectangular shaped and is wired to the coil if you have it on your vehicle these sometimes go bad . one point should show 12v dc the other side should show 9 v dc with meter.if you do have a crank posistion sensor, it is located at bottom front of engine.
let me know what you find.....chris

Ok, the ballast resistor was on Dodge 318's up until 1999 as far as I know. So there should be one on the vehicle. You can add a heavy gauge wire to it to see if it is bad. On vans it is located in the very front under the hood, driver's side. I dont know where it is on the pickup truck. Also, if timing jumps i do not believe it will spark. if you replaced the rotor, make sure it is in time. Some cycles of the rotor are out-of-synch with the oil pump and you may be 180degrees out. try rotating the rotor all the way around after marking it, of course, and see if you get spark. otherwise, crank sensor or ground sound like the all need checking. Dodge is notorious for loose ignition modules.
You say that you replaced the pick-up coil. If you have a pick-up coil then you don't have crank position sensor. 1st check for spark at plugs during "no start". If not ,check for spark from coil wire. If o/k then check rotor and dist cap for carbon tracking.
If you have a distributor and a pick-up coil inside the dist and you replaced the pick-up then you do not have a crankshaft position sensor. CPS is used on engines that have no distributor and use the sensor to locate No 1 cylinder to fire the coils in the right order. The pick-up that you have inside the distributor tells the coil when to fire. The rotor spins around and gives the spark to each cylinder. The spark goes from coil to center of dist. and through the rotor to the plug towers. Check for spark at the coil wire entering the dist.If o/k, check for spark at the wires coming out of the dist. IIf o/k then you may have a problem that occurs now and then. Possible carbon tracks inside dist cap. Possible rotor has burn through to dist. shaft. Spark should go to dist and come out. Humidity and moisture can affect this. If you check all this and you still have "no start", then you should be sure that the fuel system is operating correctly. If this has helped, let me know. If you need more info, post what you need. Moe
Crank sensor is located at the rear of the motor between engine block and trans housing. On the passenger side. Near the distributor. A small bolt or two holds it in place, Once the bolts are out the sensor will need to be pulled up and out. A two wire lead is attached to a connector and can be seperated. This sensor is about 2-3 inches long and about 1/2 inch thick. It is made of hard plastic and can be britle after it has been in the engine for a long time. This sensor is a wire wound magnet that digitally keeps track of a cogged wheel inside the trans housing.Hope this helps Moe
Moe here. It now runs ,but runs bad. Please check the fuel pressure and tell me it is o/k. The fuel pressure should be about 15-30 psi on TBI system. If it is multi-port then the fuel pressure should be 45-55 psi. If you don't have proper pressure the engine will be hard to start and have driveability problems. Hope this helps.

Usually answered in minutes!
you say it doesnt have a crank position sensor but the parts place said that is probly my problem i checked for the part online and it showed 4 different kinds confused
they also took a screw driver put it in the coil wire plug on both ends and stuck it to metal and said it didnt spark .all i no is its driving me crazy
well guys it does have a crank position sensor and it doesnt have a ballask but the pick up coil wires cut every time you put the cap back on
ive put in a pick up coil, crank sensor, new plugs and i got it started and i found like a savey supstance on a couple of my relay switches . it runs but it still wont hardly start at times and misses like crazy i hope some one can help me out this thing is driving me crazy and its the only vehicle i have to go to work in thanks teresa
Where is the #3 coil on a dodge ram 1500 2003 truck
Where is the #3 coil on a dodge ram 1500 2003 truck
My turck cranks over gas is passing but wont start there is also a spark in the coil
how do I test pickup coil in a 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.9 4x4
i can hook a jumper wire to the positive terminal on the coil and it will make the fuel pump turn on but not the coil
