I just bought new seat belts for my 2003 mustang gt. I am trying to make sure they work before installing them in my car, but I cannot get the belt to pull out of the retractor. Is this normal?

On the part that you squeeze to raise the head rest is a little hole on the inside between the 2 bars. You need to push a paper clip or something like that in the hole to release the stop and keep pushing as you lift. Once that is done then you can pull the rest out.
first disconnect the battery, that seat belt unit can blow up, it has an explosive charge to tighten the belt in an accident, and make sure you are static free.
most of these are held in place with just plastic clips and just takes some pushing and pulling. it should just be the bolt at the top of the belt harness that you will need tools for.
never seen one here in spain, but most cars you have to remove the door rubber surround first then the kicker plate to remove the pillar trim to get to the seat belt mechanism .best of british
