Steering airbag deploys whilst driving, and not hitting anything.

My friend was driving along, and without hitting anything (or even a pothole) his steering airbag deploys. What is the reason for this, I am thinking it is a faulty sensor, any help. Thanks.

You must RUN the scanner/computer for easy diagnostic, and fix it.
Is the best way, other intent is Futil.
However you can go to www.autoelectronico.com translte the web with your browser, get the topic and proceed.
God bless you

Testimonial: "Thanks. Found out the problem. It is an issue with the a/c water hose being blocked and then water leaking onto the airbag module. It makes it short circuit and deploy. Thanks."

Airbags have deployed. Car will not crank

What is the reason for the deployment of the airbags , did you hit the car or they open with no reason. If you hit the car there is fail safe mechanism to stop the engine automatically.

Hit a deer head on square in center of front end at 45mph my air bags did not deploy

Airbags are designed to keeo you from hitting the windshield or steering wheel. If you were not injured in the colision the I would say that the airbag was not needed and the system work the way it was designed.

Deployed air bags

My daughter has a "99 Saturn SC1, and she hit a curb and deployed hers. I (Many years as a mechanic) replaced both bags, the computer which is located under the center console, and the "clock spring" located behind the steering wheel to get it all working. (No air bag light on while driving) The steering wheel airbag melted the clock spring when it fired. I purchased these all used on E-Bay.

Side air bag deployed while on the highway. No damage to outside of car. Was driving down highway and the drivers side air deployed. I did not hit anything from what i saw on the outside of car. Has this...

in the U.S. the airbags are programmed to deploy @ 9mph(roughly the same as hitting a kerb hard.)so if the airbag went off you would not know if you hit a pothole, unless you went back to look....dont know any makers airbags that have recalls applied to them.
think of the litigation if there were...........

2002 jetta tdi airbags problems

It is not supposed to be possible for the airbags to deploy when the car isnt moving. Sounds like the car had a defective airbag system, Just be grateful it never blew up while you were behind the wheel. If it were me I would contact VW and see if they are willing to help you. And if you decide to replace the airbags, I would fight like crazy with the insurance company to have every aspect of the airbag system replaced(all sensors and computers associated with it). If you are in America, your state has an attorney generals office, If no one is willing to work with you, A friendly and concise letter to the attorney general usually straightens everyone up.
