It is more than likely your water pump. Can you run it in park with the radiator cap off. The cap on the radiator not the overflow tank. When the temp opens the thermostat you should see flow if the pump is good no flow it is probably bad. If you don't see flow check the upper hose for temp and the lower hose. If the upper line is barely warm and the lower hose is significantly hotter, it is either water pump or thermostat, but since you replaced the thermostat I would be back to water pump. BTW you should use either a contact thermometer or an infrared to check hoses, although it was done by hand in the old days.

does the upper and lower hoses seem to be the same temp when car begins to overheat? ore the radiator cooling fans coming on before the car overheats? did you pressure test the cooling system and radiator cap? also may want to remove the lower hose and flush the radiator. is the check engine light on and does it run bad?

ok this is why we keep reciepts at our house. you have already bought everything you need to fix the problem. we just need to figure out what went wrong. lets start with the coolent level make sure you have plenty of coolent in the radiator. ok you hear the fans go on make sure they are turning. if thats good i would do the cheepest thing first. new thermostat make sure its the right one for your car the auto store can tell you. it could have seized up after sitting. also if you may want to look for that water pump reciept. just because something is new dosent mean that it works correctly, that goes for thermostat also. now if all of this doesent fix it there are 2 more things and it has to be one of them or both of them. [ important ]when you had this work done was the radiator flushed out and cleaned? if not- even if all these parts are changed you still have sludeg in your radiator that can go right into your new pump and clogg it or the thermostat or clogg the radiator itself whitch still may be a problem. i would start with a radiator flush AND a new thermostat. make sure you have fluid circulation if not its the pump again. i hope this gives you help REMEMBER NEVER WORK ON A HOTT CAR LET IT COOL COMPLETLY DOWN A SATURDAY MORNING PROJECT FOR SURE...

the lower radiator hose is a return hose and there are no vapor lock issues. If your coolant level is full when you start your vehicle and when it heats up and the system pressurizes your coolant expands with heat and then that excess pressure will go through the overflow outlet to the reservoir and the reservoir has a relief opening near the top to relieve pressure or for excess fluid to come out. If the lower hose is just warm then your water pump may not be circulating properly (be sure to check belt for tension no more than 1/2 inch of play should be present). One messy way to test water pump would be to first drain coolant if it is good to reuse it, then remove the lower hose, open the radiator cap and put a water hose in it and turn on half way. Look at the volume of water coming out and have someone start the vehicle and idle at about 2000 rpm if that volume has not doubled your pump is bad

There are a few connections ports that need to be checked. if you cannot find the leak at these places then that happens at the seal of the water pump. When the water pump seal is bad then time to replace the water pump. Why? it is the same labor for the job. Hope that you don't get overheat. This is happening when your water pump is not turning: broken bearings.

Therefore check these following connections first, sometimes the rubber hoses get deteriorated then the clamps need to be tightened to minimize the leak.
1- Upper hose connect to radiator.
2- Lower hose connect to bottom radiator and engine port that is water pump inlets
3- Over flow hose.
4- 2 Heater hoses coming to the fire walls.

First, plastic tube may be the overflow vent from the coolant bottle.Check to see where the attached end goes. You are going to have to check engine for coolant leaks (carefully refill system without spilling anything, then look for dripping anywhere. Look for leaks from all hoses, fittings radiator, water pump etc) After checking for leaks, start it up and check again (watch where you put your hands though) While running, check that the fan comes on when the vehicle reaches operating temp.(no fan, check fan motor, sensor & relay) Turn the heat on (does it have heat?) Check temp of lower hose and upper hose. If overheat happens, is lower hose still cold? (likely bad thermostat). If you found a leak, replace whatever is leaking...best insurance is to change thermostat after any overheat. Last, is there any white smoke from tailpipe, does engine run rough? If so, could be a failed head gasket or crack in cylinder head. (at this point last thing to worry about unless there is excessive smoke or rough run or oil in radiator or coolant in oil).
