Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

Wife backed out of driveway. Said car went dead and she shifted back into Park and got me. We pushed back into drive. Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now. Tried key in ignition to ACC but gear shift will not move out of Park. Checked all my fuses (including #3) and they are all good.

I have the same problem on a 99 Olds the car killed out on me (bad Alternator) Thought was something worse.
But my shifter says it in park but the cluster says it's in reverse. And only way to start it I have to turn the key to AC then shift it till the cluster says Nutrual and the shifter says Reverse. To start it but I can't park in hilly areas or the car will won't to back out or go forwarded depending on how it's park and my car guy says it's a bad link with the shifter cord. And if I shut the car off and put the shifter in park am able to remove the key. But the cluster stays in reverse. And if I don't hit the shifter hard in park it keeps my reverse lights on which drains ******* the battery.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

Testimonial: "Thanks. I'll look it up. Once I locate it though, then what? heh."

That or the link has been pulled hard enough where it locked it's self where it's not or has be stretch which meaning the shifter cable has to replaced. I have to do the same.

SOURCE: cant get shift out of park

It sounds much like failed linkage which is better than about anything else you checked.
I recommend procuring a Haynes or Chilton manual for your car. It will not only help you locate the source of your current misery but serve you well in the future too. They are available at about any auto parts store for ~$20 US

SOURCE: I have a '92 Dodge

Do you have your foot on the brake when you try to move the gearshift? Other than that you will have to look under the hood and see if the linkage is hung up or broken somewhere.Mostly the the linkage is snapped out. ------------ Try readjusting shifter. Once the shift cable is properly adjusted, the indicator in the instrument cluster can be adjusted separately. Use a 9/64" allen wrench to turn the adjusting screw. That screw is in a white plastic housing and tube on top of the steering column. You'll need to remove the "knee blocker" panel under the column, then look just to the right of the fuse box for that screw. Shift to neutral, then adjust the screw until the pointer is in the middle of the "N" ---------- This has to be inspected. This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Gear shifter won't shift into reverse or park

When you "muscled it into neural" you broke the shifter. Most likely it will take a replacement shifter to repair.

2004 dodge intrepid wont move out of park

Usually a problem with the brake switch or the solenoid that locks the shifter in park.
You may be able to unlock the key switch without turning the switch on, then take the shifter out of park.

When car is in any gear. park, reverse nuetral and drive the gear shifter on dash shows the gear always in PARK

there is a small cable/string attached to the steering column part of the shifter. when you move the shifter it pulls the cable/string, which moves the lever in the cluster on the PRNDL display. basically look carefully at where the shifter base is and you should find the cable/string thing, and reattach it.

Car wont shift into gear. Gear shift moves but gears don't

It sounds like the lever from the gear shifter has come loose. I would first look at the shifter from under the car. You can also remove the boot (or console) from inside the car and check the linlage. Most linkage is held on by a small clip or cotter pin and somethime they don't stay in place anad the linkage slides off the arm..

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!
