Feul smell in car when cold out

When it gets down in the minus teens and I start the car there is a srtong odour of gas. I am also having problems with the rpm gauge. When I accelerate and hit about 3000 rpm my temperature gauge goes down to the cold mark. The colder it is out, the less rpm's it takes to make the temp gauge drop.

The car will run richer in cold weather, especially at start. You may have an exhaust leak. Put something over the tail pipe and listen for hissing under the car. Any hiss is an exhaust leak, must be fixed.
The gauge thing may be an old, loose alternator belt, giving low voltage when things are cold and stiff. A new belt may help. Do a voltage check while watching the gauges..

My 1985 Olds Cutlass won't start and a get a strong odour of gasoline.

First check for fuel leaks. Be safe. Next I would pull the spark plugs and smell them for gas. If you smell gas on them, they are fouled out. Start with replacing them. Also check for spark. These are the two basics to check first. Spark and fuel. You have fuel because you can smell it.

Saturn SC2 - 2001 1.9 DOHC 5-speed man. Runs fine, starts cold. After running for a half hour or so if you stop the engine....you sometimes need to wait up to five minutes before it will start again. ...

There could be a few reasons for that happening....It is most likely a FEUL problem. Is it feul injection or carburettor?? If it is a carburretor, then there could be dirt in the jets. You could also have an inline filter that is blocked & not enough feul is getting through to the carb. Another thing that could be causing the car not to start after being running awhile is if the feul line is too close to the engine and is getting too much heat, causing the feul to "bubble" and faporise in the line, untill it cools down. Another cause could be that the float level in the carb is set too low or you have a faulty needle & seat.

Hope this helps.

I smell gas fumes from underneath the car when I try to start it. i didn't start the car for 5 days with weather in the teens. is my gas line frozen. i've already tried putting a bottle of "Heet" and it...

sounds like you have a leaky gas line,...the fuel pump is in the gas tank, so when you turn the key on, the pump is activated and pressurizes the line,..... good to get it checked out on a lift,....good luck, cracklin joe
