My 528i bmw overheats when at idle. i accelerate while still in park to maybe 2500 rpm's and the gauge goes back to normal. The engine driven fan is on while at idle. but when it shows that it's overheating i accelerate and hear a loud roar like if another fan turns on. I'm think it maybe its the thermostat. the vehicle comes from seattle where as now its located in el paso texas where temperatures are very hot. also the vehicle does not overheat while i'm driving on the highway but it looks like it wants to when i'm coating or in traffic.
did u read my post? the problem is the electric cooling fan does not come on, if it was the T-stat the engine would overheat all the time not just at idle, think about it my friend..did u read my post? the problem is the electric cooling fan does not come on, if it was the T-stat the engine would overheat all the time not just at idle, think about it my friend..
don't waste your time at this free forum, u keep overheating this engine and u will be out $1000's for engine damage, the problem is most likely the engine cooling system radiator electric fan is not working, go to a dealer ASAP!don't waste your time at this free forum, u keep overheating this engine and u will be out $1000's for engine damage, the problem is most likely the engine cooling system radiator electric fan is not working, go to a dealer ASAP!

Sounds like a partially plugged radiator. Colder temps will be OK but when weather warms up the problem shows up too...check for leaves etc between the radiator and ac condenser before doing anything else. Stuff on the outside will act the same way as an internal obstruction.

It could be one of the coils, a vacuum leak, idle control valve, bad spark plug, plugged cat converter or vanos problem. Get the codes read out and go from there.
need to make sure that the thermostat is working properly and the system is full..do this by idling the car for about 30 minutes and observe the goings on with the cars systems if its gonna overheat it will do it no matter what..idling or driving..look for pressure build up in the system by squeezing the upper hoses if the seem to get inflated and stiff you may have pressure weepage into the system..this will maybe call for new head gaskets..or at worst an upperengine rebuild..
First we would need to know when this occurs.
Asuming the oil level is at the full mark!. If the pressure goes up
during acceleration and down at idle when engine is fully warmed up,
then this is normal. An engine requires 10 psi of oil pressure per
1,000 rpm ( ex. 20 psi at 2,000 rpm, 25 psi at 2,500 rpm, and so on )
. If the gauge is moving back and forth erratically at idle , i would
say the gauge is bad. If it drops to 0 while accelerating I would say
your oil pump is bad. If from time to time it seems to work and other
times it seems not to work, I would say the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is bad.
If the pump failed you would start to here a
Knocking noise from the engine in a short period of time. Use the
above scenario's to narrow down what it may be.
.the control sensor throttle ,look on the opposite side to the cable and a little box thingy with a wiring connection ,unless its a later vehicle then this will use a fly by wire. But i do fell this type of fault is beyond the average weekend mechanic and i would advise you to visit a dealer
my 528i does, or did the same thing. Overheating is bad for those aluminum cylinder heads. 1st, replace the coolant. Then check to see if the electric cooling fans work, or cycle on, they most certainly would have to cycle on when the temp gauge is in the red zone.
1st thing most people do is replace the thermostat. However, if the temp goes from overheating to not overheating in less than a minute, the thermostat is working. The key thing to look for is why did it get to the red zone in the first place.
Pressure test cooling system to determine origin of leak. Radiator and coolant reservoirs are common problems. Vehicle is very difficult to purge air from cooling system and may take multiple times of idling until thermostat opens. Sometimes help to rev engine to about 2500 rpm 5-8 times to help build heat and move coolant through system. Must have heater on while performing this task.
do you think it might be the thermostat
