I've got a 2001 vw jetta tdi. The glow plug light flashes occasionally, and the cruise control is intermittent. The biggest problem that i have is the engine lacks power. I can barely get 80kms on even a slight incline. The engine really doesn't want to get above 2500 rpms. Has anyone heard of this type of problem before? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Keith.

Usually white smoke is water or coolant. The compression test suggests the head gaskets are ok, but make sure the coolant is clean anyway. Is it possible the car has bad fuel? Water in fuel? Theres no ignition system to cause a miss, but if the diesel fuel isnt pure, it wont combust either. Honestly, I would try putting some good fresh fuel in it and see what happens.

this is a common problem for these cars glow plugs go bad like spark plugs however the smoke would lead to bad mass airflow meter. it is not telling ecu corrcet miss. disconnect mass airflow meter. when cold see if this makes it start better. it should would means you need new m.a.f. glow plug issue take a test light place clamp on positive of battery then pull off glow plug connectors place tip of test light on glow plug the bad one will have a dull light unlike the good one which will be brighter. will need new plugs and wire harness four **** connectors and wire striper and crimper will fix concern good luck
