I bought a 93 sc400 that had a 2 prong wire and a toggle switchplugged in where the starter relay should be..u have to turn the key all the way on and then flip the switch to start the car. .is this ok or should I buy the relay and put that in?

There's only 2 more things that I can think of, check the fuse for the ignition, then the computor itself, you did everything else.It might be the problem and may not.

This may help.A relay is just a switch that's used to isolate a control circuits power source from the device's that it's being used to switch.On motor vehicles the relay is genarally grounded to the chassis and all you need to supply is a positive lead to turn it on.Here's a quick schematic,The negative is to the chassis,the positive leads need to be kept on separate circuits,but note the relay can switch either direction.

The mechanic should check on the wires and fuse going to the starter motor and the spare parts . since when you test the starter motor and seems no problem to it ,it means that the problem is in the other spare parts connected to the starter motor .check the alternator if it is good and functioning well. The solenoid you also have to check it to be sure because it is very much connected to the starter motor .those spare parts that are worn out or destroyed , you should replace them .

1st, There is a relay in the PDC, marked for starter, pull the relay out and swap with a relay beside it, if it works, bad relay. 2nd if not relay , remove and check pin no 30 with test light, should have power, straight opposite is pin 87 that goes to starter, jump these two pins and starter should crank over,if ok. 3rd, check pin 85, comes from nuetral safety switch, test with test light, pos batt to this pin 85, light should be on, if not you have a problem in that circuit or switch. 4th, pin86 comes from the igntion switch, yellow wire, in crank mod this pin 86 should light up with test light, if not, you have a problem with that cicuit, to switch, possible broken wires in collumn connecter to switch. The gear reduction starter on this motor has a pattern failure of the solenoid contacts that transmit the voltage to the starter brushes. There is a repair kit available for replacing the contacts or you might just change the starter with a rebuilt unit. Intermittent function is almost always this problem.
