I have a 1.6 Passat and there is a buzzing/humming noise coming from the engine when it is off. This can keep going until the battery is dead. The engine light has now started to come on

It could be your alternator has gone bad and over charging the electrical system and the bearing to the alterntor has gone bad also and will need to be replaced soon as posible. If you have a volt meter check the voltage at the battery when the care is running and there should be no more then 13.5 volts, anthing higher and your going to need a new battery soon. If there a Auto Zone around your area, they can check the voltage for you and may be determine where the noise is coming better then us on line since where not there. Good luck and hope this helps. If it is the alternator, Auto Zone may and can order the parts and give the step by step instructions to replace the parts with common tools or ask one of the guys to help you work on the car after work for less then the dealer's cost for the repairs. Good luck and keep me posted. be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon.

Are you losing power as well? if so it sounds like the camshaft is worn, this can be confirmed with a compression test

Hi:
Often "humming" noises like what you are experiencing are caused by a failing bearing somewhere. Some usual suspects are wheel bearings, alternator bearings, and sometimes even your waterpump, but usually it starts leaking too. To start narrowing down what it is, have someone ride with you to see if the noise is coming from left side or right side, or engine area, then see if it happens when the car is not moving, or just when the drive wheels are pulling the car? This way , hopefully you can pin point the culprit!
