I know they have problems with the cooling fans on those, and they can make allot of noise. What happens is the fan clutch gets stuck engaged and revs with the engine. Hope that helps?

Whining could be the water pump. That would cause over heating and to much pressure which blew out an old radiator. An over heated engine will not have power. But it also could be the engine is worn out and has no compression in the cylinders. Do a compression test first, before throwing money at it.
Hi, need more information. What are you doing when it whines, i.e. does it whin at rest with the engine running, is it whining in certain gears only. Does the whine appear to be coming from the engine bay or elsewhere.Does sound like it is coming from one of the wheels. Does whine increase as you accelerate. please supply more detail.
Also, is it diesel or petrol? Please add more detail and resubmit
No it will not -now all BMWs are rear wheel drive so a whinning noise i would assume to be a diff so ask a local mechanic to check it out for you to have a proper idea what the problem is
USualy it is one or both of the front wheel bearings that have gone bad, while yo have the vehicle on a jack stand with the engine off and making sure that the wheels are set straight, hold the tire on top and bottom and try to move it if there is any movement felt you have bad wheel bearings.
you will have disconect the neg.-BAT TERMINAL then loosen alt. adjusting bolt, remove alt. belt( or remove serpentine belt if so exist) then remove the two existing bolt at the bottom of the alt.then remove altenator.ree-install in reverse direction.
it changes with the engine speed, also get high revs before gears engage
Whining when I accelerate.
