1996 Isuzu Trooper Crankshaft bolt is impossible to turn

We have used 4ft. cheater bars and still have not broke loose this bolt. We have tried jaming the breaker bar and using the starter. We have tried all of our impact wrenches with Liquid wrench soaked over night still no luck what is next???? What is the trick to this bolt ????

    Thanks for the Help I was one who asked the question. It was not as easy as a propane torch and my 500 lb. impact wrench though. We ended up using a 1in impact but it didn't loosen it ether then we put a welding troch to it and got it cherry red. On the second try it came loose, the heat did the trick. The bolt is a wash and it is a special order so now we are waiting on parts. This was lots of hours of fun.

"Heat" and air impact is the trick. Get it as hot as you can and hit it with air impact. Be careful not to burn yourself!

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck with your repair.

    Your bolt is "NOT" left handed thread. The trick is heat, and air impact.

  • Anonymous May 09, 2009

    Glad to hear you finally got it out. As I stated you would need to get it as hot as you could. Propane is sometimes hot enough, but in most cases it isn't. Anyway good luck on the rest of the repair.

Sorry to ask the obvious but are you going in the right direction? I don't think it is a lefthanded thread but have you tried going the other way. Impact wrench is the way to go. Check your hose size, should be 3/8 minimum 1/2 better. Impact wrenches use incredible volumn of air and a undersize hose can render the best gun useless. Don't be afaid to let the gun hammer away for a while, even a minute or two without stopping. good luck cb

Trying to change the water pump on my Isuzu Trooper-1991, 4 cylinder...Removed belts and pulley, but having trouble removing LOWER (crank shaft pulley) pulley bolt, 15/16th I believe? How can I remove...

Sometimes you have to heat the head of the bolt with a torch the use an impact wrench to break it loose.

If you don't have access to the above, you can remove the starter motor and jam the flywheel with a screwdriver or something and use a long breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt. (Kind-of the hard way, but it can work)

If you are replacing the water pump, it is recommended that you also replace the timing belt and the belt tensioner pulley while you are in there. I also personally recommend replacing the camshaft, crankshaft, and oil pump shaft seals. This can keep you from having to go back in there because of an oil leak. If this is all done at the same time, there will be no need to go back in there for another 60,000 miles.

Hi ive got a 1996 isuzu bighorn ive attempted to change the timing belt but the injector pump pulley moved when i took the belt off. i put it back where i thort it was and tried a tooth either way but no...

Timing belt installation

1. Ensure locking bolts located correctly [4] & [5] in the picture below:

tdisline_32.jpg
CS = Crankshaft
CA = Camshaft
IP = Injection Pump

2. Ensure timing marks aligned [10].
3. Fit timing belt in clockwise direction, starting at crankshaft sprocket.

NOTE: "ISUZU" lettering on belt should be readable from front of engine.

4. Slacken tensioner pulley bolt [9]. Push tensioner pulley against belt.
5. Ensure belt is taut between injection pump sprocket and tensioner pulley as well as crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket.
6. Position tensioner lever [8] against tensioner pulley housing.
7. Remove locking bolts from sprockets [4] & [5].
8. Apply a load of 10 ... 12 kg to tensioner lever. Use spring balance [11].
9. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to 80 Nm.
10. Turn crankshaft slowly 45 degrees anti-clockwise. Use spring balance to tension belt.
11. Repeat tensioning procedure at 45 degrees intervals for one anti-clockwise turn of the crankshaft.

NOTE: DO NOT turn crankshaft clockwise during tensioning procedure!

12. Fit tensioner lever to original position. Tighten nuts [12].
13. Install: Injection Pump flange [6], Camshaft sprocket flange [7], and water pump pulley.
14. Install components in reverse order of removal & refill coolant.

Which way do I turn the main bolt on crankshaft to get main pulley off. I went counter-clock wise and it broke the braker bar.

you turned it the right way but will have to use an air impact to get it loose or a hammer to hit the ratchet or breaker bar with, you need a half inch drive breaker bar to get it loose and it will have to be in gear and the emergency brake on to get it loose.

Drive belt is loose on 6 cylinder 96 jeep. How do I adjust it?

You will Probably need a New Belt Tensioner. Draw a Diagram of the Belt Routing Before Removal of the Belt.You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Remove the Belt. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Timmingbelt on a 95 honda accord wagon with 16valve

It loosens counter clockwise (normal thread), but it takes about 450lbs to loosen, then use the proper puller to pull that pulley or risk ruining the crankshaft. 1 note 450 LBS is a hi qyuality (like snap-on or mac tools) half inch ratchet with a large cheater pipe on it

life begins when the kids leave home and the dog dies
