Do you notice that the engine coolant temperature gauge stays on the lower part of the scale as well? If so, it's likely that your thermostat is stuck open - this prevents the coolant from staying in the block long enough to absorb heat that is used to heat the climate-controlled air. I'm not positive on the 3.0 in your car, but the 2.8 V6 in my Audi A4 requires tremendous disassembly in order to change the thermostat. I believe the 3.0 is the same - the labor involved is only slightly less than that required to do a timing belt change (which, if you change the thermostat, since you're already all the way in there, you may as well do the t-belt service as well so you don't have to pay for all that labor again any sooner than necessary).

2002 passat 1.8 takes 30 miles driving to get above 100 degrees only on cool mornings. afternoons are fine heats right up. suggestions>

Thermostat is probably bad. If when it is cold out your heat doesn't get very warm then it is the thermostat for sure.

Alarm going offwhen engine started. More often when cold. When engine warm dosenot happen as often

VW Passat lose their connection with the key a lot. Try opening the trunk & leave open while you put one key in the ignition & one in the driver's door, then your buttons should finally be able to turn off the alarm. I spent a very cold winter last year trying to get my alarm to turn off til I found this answer.

V reg volkswagen passat, heater blows cold air. Temperature gauge fine, undone pipes and flushed out system, liquid was brown and rusty, warmed a little after this but still cold. All pipes leading into...

As it was rusty i would assume the poor thermostat has been abused, it's in the waterpump and a few minutes to change. They are £6+ from main dealer. If in the open position(wax has no life left to open or close and spring keeps it open) this is why all seems fine but no heat. With the thermostat in the open position(faulty) your car will use more fuel and wear and tear on the engine particulary at cold starts will increase so change it sooner rather than later.

I OWN A VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT, JUST BOUGHT IT NOW THE HEAT BOLWS OUT COLD AIR WHAT SHOULD i CHECK OR DO

Check operation of the heater coolant on/off control valve and operating mechanism.
Check thermostat is installed and working OK - replace if in doubt.
Check if coolant heater supply hoses are warm/hot when coolant valve on.
If hoses are cold (no coolant flow evident) check coolant system is properly filled (bleed system as necessary to remove possible air locks).
If still no coolant flow check heater system for blockage.
If all above ok, check heater unit air control vanes operation.

Won't start when cold

Check the Cold Cranking Amps on the Battery that you have. Normally the Cheaper the Battery the Lower the Cold Cranking Amps. I Recommend getting an "Interstate Battery" . It costs a Little more But has a Warranty and the Cold Cranking Amps that you need. They have never let me Down!

Over heating

Check your thermostat. To see if it opens when hot. From cold drop the thermostat in hot water, if it opens it is alright.
